NSW cleans up during Brisbane Winter Carnival

The Brisbane Winter Carnival has ended for another year and it was New South Wales and New Zealand-based trainers that scored big.

James Cummings and Godolphin scored nine wins throughout the carnival, headlined by Stradbroke Handicap winner Trekking. Cummings also won the following races:

  • Mumm Stakes (Duca Valentinois)
  • Winning Edge Stakes (Kordia)
  • Helen Coughlin Stakes (Multaja)
  • Lightning Stakes (Plague Stone)
  • Moreton Stakes (Savatiano)
  • Chief de Beers (Isaurian)
  • Mick Dittman Plate (Plague Stone)
  • Silk Stocking (Demerara)

Chris Waller also has a successful campaign, scoring six wins. Invincibella winning the Group 1 Tattersalls Tiara was the highlight, which also included wins from Kolding, Sexy Eyes, Le Juge and Life Less Ordinary.

The Group 1 prize went to Kiwi trainer Tony Pike, who lined up The Bostonian to win the Doomben 10,000 and the Kingsford-Smith Cup.

A quality sprinter, The Bostonian was looking to become the first horse to do the treble and win the Stradbroke Handicap but he missed the jump and was never a chance.

Queensland scored their lone Group 1 in the Queensland Oaks when Winning Ways created an upset with horse racing bookmakers
