Te Akau Shark impresses in trial

Te Akau Shark has been primed for his upcoming Melbourne Spring Carnival assault with a trial win at Te Rapa on Monday.

The four-year-old was a six-length winner at his last start before suffering an injury, which caused him to miss the autumn. However, he's back and ready for an Australian campaign which could feature the Epsom Handicap.

Firstly, Te Akau will target the Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa next month for both Te Akau Shark and NZ Horse of the Year Melody Belle.

"Melody Belle and Te Akau Shark are coming along nicely and the trial will do them the world of good. All going well, they will be back again in a fortnight and then we can reassess where each of them is at from there," trainer Jamie Richards said.

"It is likely they will clash first-up in the Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa on August 17.

"The Foxbridge is an ideal stepping stone for where we want to go with them both."

Melody Belle will likely target the Hawke's Bay Triple Crown, which features the Windsor Park Plate.

For Te Akau Shark, the ultimate goal could be the Cox Plate where he's currently a 15.00 chance at BetEasy.
