Cox Plate on the agenda for Kiwi Group 1 winner
Stephen McKee knows what it takes to win the Cox Plate and he'll be back with Consensus in 2019
Consensus has already won at The Valley in the aptly-named Sunline Stakes for trainer Stephen McKee
McKee eyes Cox Plate with Consensus
A Kiwi Group I winner will be heading to Melbourne for a spring campaign – but only once she is confirmed to be in foal.
Consensus won the Group I Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie in 2016 but made a successful trip to Australia in the autumn where she won the Group II Sunline Stakes (1600m) at The Valley.
Unplaced Sydney and Queensland runs followed her Sunline Stakes success but trainer Stephen McKee told the NZ Racing Desk the Cox Plate is the spring dream for Consensus.
McKee said Consensus will run in Saturday’s Group II Foxbridge Plate (1200m) at Te Rapa before her important date in the breeding barn.
“As long as she comes through the race well, we can then concentrate on the next task which will be to have her served by Iffraaj,” McKee said.
“There are no firm plans for her campaign as it will all depend on how the date with Iffraaj goes.
“She won’t be going to Hastings for the spring carnival races but we won’t be heading over to Melbourne before she has tested positively in foal.”
McKee said the stable would need to decide the right way to get Consensus to the Cox Plate but he will not be short of options for the eight-year-old daughter of Postponed.
“We know she can be competitive over there so we just have to work out the best way to get to the big target, the Cox Plate,” he said.
“I haven’t really looked beyond the Foxbridge as so much depends on how things go when she gets served but if that goes to plan, we will be heading over later on in September.
“There are some nice mares’ races that will suit her build-up so there are plenty of options for her when we do get there.”
