Winx Stakes Tips & Runner-by-Runner Preview

Group 1 racing returns for the new season at Randwick, and we have a runner-by-runner betting guide for the Winx Stakes on Saturday.

The Winx Stakes (1400m) is one of the premier races to kick off the spring carnival in Sydney. It has attracted a field of 14 and Verry Elleegant has emerged as the favourite.

Stablemates Kolding and Hungry Heart are big dangers, but there is always an upset possible in the big races.

We look at the form of every runner in the 2021 Winx Stakes.

Kolding

He finished off well enough for fifth at Randwick last start, and that form should stack up nicely. The Waller-trained gelding is an 11-time winner of more than $6.3 million, so he demands respect at all levels of racing.

Think It Over

Punters won’t get the same odds available last campaign with Think It Over. He won twice in impressive fashion, and he’s a runner to follow throughout the spring. He’s a winning chance fresh up, so don’t rule him out.

Cascadian

We have been burned with Cascadian on many an occasion. He gets back and doesn’t help himself with his racing tactics. If they go quickly up front, he’s capable of finishing over the top. However, this should be too tough fresh up.

Dreamforce

A contender at the price and he’s a six-time winner at Randwick. He is also a seven-time winner over the distance, so he’ll be fired up. Look for Nash Rawiller to try cross from a wide barrier and set them up in front.

Imaging

He didn’t show much during the Queensland Winter Carnival, and he owns only one placing from seven attempts at Randwick. He’s not running well enough for our liking, and the odds reflect that.

Star of the Seas

Another Waller-trained runner that will be better for the run. He either likes the track firm or muddy, so he should get conditions to suit. However, this would be a huge upset.

Keiai Nautique

Japanese runners always add some spice, but this bloke is a true stayer who needs the run. He is likely to get back and run on late, but connections are using this race as a guide for the spring staying features.

Master of Wine

He's capable on his day but that’s unlikely to be Saturday. There is a big win in store for Master of Wine, but we would prefer to see him in action before tipping him.

Brandenburg

In a similar camp to Master of Wine. We’re not doubting his ability, but this isn’t the right race for him. They should be too speedy over the 1400m.

Mount Popa

Nothing wrong with his form in Melbourne, but it has come at levels much easier than Group 1 grade. A nice type for the future and credit to connections for having a go, but it’s unlikely to come off.

Mo’unga

A dangerous type that has struggled since exiting age-group racing. That’s the big concern and his effort for 10th in the Doncaster Mile was a touch disappointing. He should have matured since, so keep safe.

Verry Elleegant

The Kiwi runner is the class act of the field, and she is a 13-time winner from 29 starts. She might have a Caulfield Cup on her record, but she is capable of sprinting over 1400m. She is a three-time winner over the distance, and we’re not surprised by the odds.

She’s Ideel

Connections are having a throw at the stumps, but we wouldn’t be parting with our money. She’s Ideel is better suited to something easier.

Hungry Heart

A nice type in the making that will hit the line with purpose. Punters get double-figure odds, and the four-year-old mare could be worth an each-way bet.

Verdict

It's tough to overlook Verry Elleegant. The Chris Waller-trained Kiwi mare is the class act in the field, and she doesn't take long to find her best form.

She opened as the favourite and has remained rock-steady in markets, which is a good sign.

Her ability comes at all distances, so the 1400m is a good starting point for what promises to be a fruitful season.
