Underwood Stakes Tips & Runner-by-Runner Preview

Only five runners have accepted for the Group 1 Underwood Stakes but it should be an intriguing contest.

Zaaki has scared off most of the potential opposition, but with the likes of Probabeel and Superstorm in the field, it could make for a tactic affair. Small fields can often produce upset results, so punters should be wary of the other four runners in the field.

We look at the form of every runner in the 2021 Underwood Stakes at Sandown on Saturday.

Fifty Stars

The Tom Dabernig-trained runner will need to find much better form than he has shown in two starts back from a spell. He ran 10th at Caulfield fresh up before running 12th at Flemington behind Incentivise, which isn't going to impress many punters. However, he is unbeaten in two starts at Sandown, so that shouldn't be overlooked.

The boom horse after winning his five starts, including a disqualification. He is trained by Annabel Neasham after arriving from Europe. Not many predicted he would mature into a stellar type, who looks to have the Cox Plate at his mercy next month. $1.28 is incredibly short for a Group 1 race, but we understand why bookmakers aren't taking any risks. He's an explosive type who should be awfully tough to hold out.

The Chosen One

$19 is a value price for The Chosen One, despite some things going against the Kiwi. He would have preferred racing against a bigger field, as he's not a push-button type, but there is nothing wrong with his form coming into the Underwood Stakes. He hit the line impressively for third behind Superstorm last start, and he typically improves with a run under his belt. His odds have firmed since opening at $26, so that is a positive move.

Rising in class won't be easy for Superstorm, but the Danny O'Brien-trained gelding is capable of producing an upset. He is only a three-time winner, but he has won over $1.5 million in stakes, so that can't be overlooked. The five-year-old son of Sebring showed fight when beating Elephant last start at Moonee Valley, and despite this being much harder, he has each-way claims.

Probabeel is the biggest danger to Zaaki, and we wouldn't be surprised to see him win. The Kiwi five-year-old is an 11-time winner from 25 starts, and although she has yet to race at the track and distance, the 1800m at Sandown is right up her alley. We were impressed with her win fresh up at Caulfield before running fifth behind Sierra Sue last week. Being on the quick back-up should help, so she'll be rock-hard fit. $5.50 is a fair price for a proven Group 1 winner.

It's tough to look past Zaaki, but there is no value in the odds. Therefore, we're backing Probabeel on an each-way basis.

The Kiwi mare is proven at this level, and she is better for the two runs under her belt this season.

Zaaki will be in the mix and Superstorm could round out the trifecta.
