Turnbull Stakes Tips & Runner-by-Runner Preview

10 high-quality thoroughbreds have entered the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, including Incentivise and Verry Elleegant.

Bookmakers have framed the market as a two-horse race, but former Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet and Colette could have something to say about it.

We look at the form of every runner in the 2021 Turnbull Stakes.

Sir Dragonet

The Cox Plate winner got close to his best when running third at Flemington behind Incentivise, which is a good guide for the rest of the spring. He is only a four-time winner overall, but he saves his best racing for the big occasions.

Explosive Jack

The Derby winner needed the fresh up run at Flemington, but the 2000m should still be too short for him. We like his chances later in the spring carnival, but he shouldn't have the pace to keep up with the two favourites.

Opened up as the $2.35 favourite before drifting. The former Queenslander is in fine form after notching an impressive winning streak, including a win at Flemington against similar opposition last start. He hasn't faced a runner like Verry Elleegant, but we wouldn't be surprised if he got the job done on Saturday.

Verry Elleegant

Verry Elleegant comes off a gutsy win at Randwick, and providing that run didn't take too much out of her, she should be ready to fire. The six-year-old is a 14-time winner, and although only one of those wins came at Flemington, she is the testing material in this field. Her odds have firmed throughout the week, so expect a top effort.

Johnny Get Angry

Yet to show anything in two runs back from a spell and he's crying out for more ground. Unlikely to figure in the finish, hence the triple-figure odds.

Punters also get huge odds for this runner, which is unlikely to test them. He hasn't done anything since resuming, and he's looking for the cups distances. We would be shocked if he ran anywhere close to the top three.

He is progressing nicely after running well for third at Flemington. He is a four-time winner at Flemington and a three-time winner at the distance. The bigger cup races are on his mind, but he gets every chance off the inside draw with only 55.5kg on his back. We wouldn't be ruling out his chances.

The five-year-old mare will likely sit out the back and soak up the early pace. She has been warming up nicely for this race, so she is worth entertaining at the odds. Damien Oliver rides and punters are getting value odds.

Mount Popa

Another runner that has yet to fire in two runs back from a spell. He has attracted some interest at the price, but we wouldn't include him in selections until we've seen something from him.

Young Werther

A promising type, but he's only a one-win four-year-old. He would need to improve his form to worry some of them in this race, so wait for another day.

It's tough to decide between Verry Elleegant and Incentivise, but we're going with the tried and tested Verry Elleegant.

She has beaten fields of this nature throughout her career, and running over 2000m looks ideal.

Colette could add some value on an each-way basis if they run quickly up front.
