Toorak Handicap Tips & Runner-by-Runner Preview

Some of Australia's best thoroughbreds embark on the Toorak Handicap, which has Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup implications.

It's always a race that provides punters with excellent form guides, and we're excited to see Elephant and I'm Thunderstruck back in action.

We look at the form of every runner in the Toorak Handicap, which runs on Saturday at Caulfield.

A quality type that scored consecutive quality wins. Solid efforts his last two, but he does need to carry 58kg, which makes it difficult. Drifting steadily throughout the week.

Scored a gritty win at Moonee Valley two back before running third at Sandown behind Cox Plate favourite Zaaki. Good enough to beat this field, but there are too many nice types in this field.

Sierra Sue

She owns three wins from her last four starts, and she was tough last time out. No easier here, but he owns two wins from three starts at Caulfield. Tough to rule out.

A six-time winner from seven starts, including an impressive victory at Sandown last time out. Unbeaten at his only run at Caulfield, and the New Zealand runner looks like the biggest danger to the favourite. Drawn and weighted well, so include.

Lunar Fox

Improving with every run this preparation and he has been backed in from a huge opening quote. However, he would need to improve significantly to beat this field.

Dice Roll

A former Hong Kong runner who made a good impression in Australia before disappointing in a couple of runs. Returned to form when running second behind Sierra Sue, and he gets the inside draw with a lightweight.

Harbour Views

Finished off best when winning fresh up and that was a tidy effort when third last time out. Likely to get back in the run and storm home late. Nice odds available.

Quantum Mechanic

A four-time winner that runs its best races at this distance. 52.5kg on her back is ideal, but we don't think she's a Group 1 contender.

Only a two-time winner, but the former European has needed time to find his best form. Unlikely to come here and that's reflected in betting markets.

Irish Flame

Didn't fire last start and he's another runner that looks outclassed. Drops in weight to 52kg, and although he has been backed in from $151 to $81, we couldn't entertain his chances.

I'm Thunderstruck

The best horse in the race and he should have won last time out, but he gets his chance to atone. He is a four-time winner from seven starts, and most of the money has come her way. His current odds are still worth taking.

So You Assume

Gunning for four consecutive wins, but this is another rise in class. A four-time winner at the distance, but her lack of turn-of-foot could be a problem.

Second Slip

Scored back-to-back wins to open his campaign before running second in a much easier race last start. 52kg on his back and an inside draw are ideal.

Unbeaten in his only start at the track and he has attracted some attention with bookmakers.

I'm Thunderstuck is the quality runner in the field and he was unlucky not to win last start. He will get back in the run and storm home late, which should suit here.

Elephant is a smart and professional winner, which should push the favourite close.
