Swan Hill Racing Tips 10.09.2021 - Follow the Smith stable

Swan Hill hosts a nine-race card on Friday, September 10, and we have our four best bets available. Our tips include two runners from the Lindsey Smith stable, who have been well-backed to score at each-way odds.
  • Race 2 1:30pm AEST – No. 12 Playing It Safe
  • Race 4 2:30pm AEST – No. 3 Dance of Thunder
  • Race 5 3:00pm AEST – No. 3 Catskill Mountain
  • Race 7 4:00pm AEST – No. 10 Easy Single

Race 2 1:30pm AEST – No. 12 Playing It Safe

The Lindsay Smith-trained three-year-old ran second on debut at Warrnambool, and she’s good enough to finish one better. She had solid betting support when running as a $4.60 chance, so it’s not surprising to see her odds shorter for her second run. The daughter of Written Tycoon didn’t fully handle the heavy track conditions, so getting to a good surface could make all the difference.

Barrier 12 is a concern over this distance, but jockey Harry Coffey is a local who knows this track inside out. That will help for this effort and Playing It Safe should be the hardest to beat.

Race 4 2:30pm AEST – No. 3 Dance of Thunder

Dance of Thunder is another Smith-trained runner that should have some success. The four-year-old gelding owns three placings from five starts, including a placing at his only attempt over this distance. He comes off a heavy track fourth at Ballarat, but prior to that he finished third at Pakenham and second at Benalla.

The son of Night of Thunder shouldn’t remain in maiden grades for very long, and he meets a field that’s there for the taking. Punters have taken his opening quote of $3.50 and confidently backed him into $3.20, so expect his odds to firm on race day.

Race 5 3:00pm AEST – No. 3 Catskill Mountain

The odds for Catskill Mountain continue to firm with every hour. He opened at $5.50, and his odds have consistently firmed. The four-year-old has had only one start for a fourth at Bendigo, but it was a respectable debut effort, and it holds him in good stead for this contest. He finished 5.3 lengths behind the winner, but he started slowly and worked into the race late.

We expect him to start much better off the inside draw, especially with Harry Coffey in the saddle. He’s a strong rider, who should give Catskill Mountain a dig out of the barriers. If he can settle close to the pace, we’re expecting the each-way odds to cash.

Race 7 4:00pm AEST – No. 10 Easy Single

Easy Single scored a home run last start at Cranbourne and we like his chances of winning again. The Maher/Eustace-trained four-year-old scored by just under a length, which followed consecutive second placings to open his account. He ran second on debut at Orange before running a short margin behind Exlover at Mildura.

Barrier four will allow him to find a good spot in the running, and he has shown good barrier speed in all three runs to date. Swan Hill is a track that favours on-speed runners, especially over the short distances. We expect jockey Michael Poy to sit on the speed and try run them into the ground at each-way odds.
