Spring Champion Stakes Tips & Runner-by-Runner Preview

Sydney's best age-group stayers are out in force at Randwick for the 2021 Spring Champion Stakes.

It could be a repeat of the Gloaming Stakes behind Head of State and Profondo, which is what the betting market suggests.

We look at the form of every runner in the Spring Champion Stakes on Saturday.

Head of State

Head of State was the more professional type when beating Profondo in the Gloaming Stakes. The Chris Waller-trained colt wore down the leader to win the race, and we're not surprised by his betting support here. Having James McDonald in the saddle helps.

Profondo

Beaten by Head of State last start, but he looks to have plenty of natural ability. He just got a little lost in front, so we could see a more conservative ride. Drawing barrier 10 will likely see him settle a touch further back, but the $1.9 million purchase has obvious upside.

Alegron

A winner fresh up before running two solid races since. Punters should respect the stable, but he might have to improve to beat the two favourites. Barrier two is ideal and punters get each-way odds.

Benaud

The debut winner scored by a length before running third behind Head of State and Profondo. That should be the best form guide for this race, so the odds are appealing.

French Emperor

Tough to line up his form after his last start failure. He finished 13th in a similar field, and we can't see that form turning around any time soon.

Raging Bull

Connections are confident after breaking maidens last start. He looks like a nice type in the making, but this race might come too soon. Drawn well and it could run into the money.

Inverell

A debut winner at Sale on debut before getting no luck at Flemington last start. There was good early betting support, which bodes well. He only needs luck from the wide draw, but the current odds are worth taking.

Patton

A one-time winner from seven starts and he has yet to do anything this preparation. That is reflected in betting markets, so we couldn't have him in our selections.

Clyde

Broke maidens at Newcastle two back before running fourth behind an average field last start. That form isn't going to worry any runner in this field. Triple-figure odds available for a reason.

Satirical Glory

Not showing enough consistency to worry this field. Followed his win at Scone with a ninth at Rosehill against similar opposition, so he needs to find a few lengths.

Never Been Kissed

Won the Flight Stakes last start and that's typically a good form guide for the Spring Champion Stakes. Gets in with a nice weight of 54.5kg, and she has been one of the better-backed runners in the field. Worth sticking with on an each-way basis.

Bulloo

Already a two-time winner this preparation, but winning form at Toowoomba isn't likely to stack up. Look to have her in something much easier.

Verdict

We're going with Profondo to turn the tables on Head of State. He was green last start, but with a straight run, we like his chances to improve.

Never Been Kissed is another winning chance, given how well the Flight Stakes form stacks up.
