Race 5: No.10 Vulcanus

The Me Tsui-trained Vulcanus is in career-best form of late and looks right in the mix here today.

Last start, the Lean Mean Machine gelding’s run of bad luck continued when he made it three-straight runner-up finishes in a Class 4, here over 1200m.

Drawn the carpark in gate 11 (of 12), he settled near last and mid-race, copped a bad check, forcing Andrea Atzeni to stop riding and re-balance the gelding.

On the turn, he was the widest runner and spotting Fortune Warrior (the eventual winner) eight lengths, chased him all the way home, beaten less than three lengths over the line.

The two gallopers clash again here with Vulcanus meeting his rival 4.5kgs better today where he also gets the gun-run from gate one and maps to settle mid-field on the fence.

Hugh Bowman is the new pilot and with the weight and gate advantage today, the four-year-old gets his chance to turn it all around in this contest.

Race 8: No.3 Magic Control

Cody Mo saddles-up Magic Control here who is high-flying this preparation and boasts strong claims for victory in this event.

Last start, the Sioux Nation gelding scored his third win this time in when he easily accounted for a Class 2 Hcp, here over 1000m.

Ridden a treat by Blake Shinn, he settled last in a bunched a field and inside the final 300m, Shin asked him for a final effort and he obliged, taking over and going on to score unchallenged in the end with 61kgs on his back that day.

He steps-up to Class 1 competition today as Matt Chadwick returns for the ride, boasting two wins and three minor placings from his five previous rides on the four-year-old.

The former Australian galloper has won over the trip previously, taking out the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes at Moonee Valley (racing as Archo Nacho), and is a three-time on the Sha Tin track.

He draws the outside gate here (in the field of eight) and maps to cross and settle mid-field or better.

He has the runs on the board, boasting six podium finishes from his seven starts this campaign and looks set to go on with it in this contest.

Race 10: No.11 Sky Heart

The Caspar Fownes-trained Sky Heart is in top-shelf form since resuming and at the weights looks a serious contender in this event.

Last start, the Ardrossan gelding went one better when he took out a Class 3 Hcp, here over 1600m.

After drawing wide in gate 11 (of 14), Hugh Bowman steered the ship that day and got him over the line, holding a late challenge from Winning Wing.

He steps up in class today, facing Class 2 company for the first time but drops 5kgs for the contest.

Lyle Hewitson is the new pilot (with Bowman booked to ride for the Tony Cruz stable here) and from gate seven, he maps to settle near the speed again.

Seeing the 1800m for the first time shouldn’t be an issue with the big drop in weight and his current form.

Already a track specialist, boasting three wins and as many minor money finishes, he should take catching again in this contest.
