We have the best bets picked from across the meeting with a Best Bet and other value selections for Sapphire Coast racetrack.
Race 4: No.6 Good Prize
The Gratz Vella-trained Good Prize is in good touch this time in and fourth-up today looks a strong chance of figuring in this event at odds.
Last start, the Prized Icon gelding bounced back from a poor showing at Queanbeyan when he arrived in time to claim victory in a BM58 over 1200m on the Queanbeyan track.
Settling worse than mid-field, Patrick Scorse worked him into the race approaching the turn, then in the run home came wide and finished over the top of them, grabbing the win on the line.
On a Soft 5 that day, his time for the 1200m of 1:08.7 was most impressive and just outside the 29-year record of 1:08.1 set by Chanted in 1996.
Damon Budler is booked for his second ride on the four-year-old and from gate seven, maps to settle near mid-field again with cover.
Fourth-up and at his peak today, a repeat of that last-start effort should see him in the finish again and is certainly worth an each-way ticket in this contest.
Race 6: No.13 Winnie Fortune
The Moruya-based Winnie Fortune is off to a flying start in her racing career and after three-straight podium finishes, looks a real winning chance in this contest.
Last start, the well-bred Winning Rupert filly came off back-to-back minor placings when she broke through for her first win in a 1200m Maiden Hcp at Nowra.
From the outside gate (7), she settled one back and one off the fence and in the run home, came off heels and finished best to grab the win on the line with Alysha Collett aboard that day on a Heavy 9 track.
The three-year-old returns to the Sapphire Coast track today where she has two podium finishes from as many starts on her resume.
Lousie Day is the new pilot as she gets the gun-run from gate one and maps to settle on the fence, behind the early speed.
If the filly can secure a clear run to the line, she should prove hard to hold out in this contest.
Race 7: No.8 Toes In The Water
Nick Olive-trained galloper is in top-shelf form this preparation and looks set to give this year’s Bega Cup a real shake today.
Last start, the Maurice mare was fourth-up for this campaign where she took on city class gallopers and comfortably beat them home in a BM64 over 1550m on the Kensington track at Randwick.
With regular rider Coriah Keatings in the saddle, she sat one off the fence behind the leader, then in the run home, took the rails-run on offer and despite carrying top weight, still finished the best and won by more than a length on the line.
That was a perfect rehearsal for today’s event as she returns to the country scene with Keatings steering the ship again.
She has drawn wide here in gate 15 (of 16) but her early speed should see the mare settling better than mid-field with cover.
The four-year-old has been set for this race and with runs already on the board, she can figure in the finish today.
Race 8: No.9 Missile Maiden
Canberra trainer Rob Potter saddles-up Missile Maiden here who is third-up today and looking a genuine chance for victory in this event.
Last start, the Smart Missile mare came off a first-up minor placing on this track when she found the podium again, finishing third in a BM58 over 1200m at Nowra.
The Heavy 9 conditions didn’t suit her that day as she battled home to secure the minor prize in the race.
Back on top of the ground today with a Good 4 forecast for the meeting, Brodie Loy is the new pilot for this assignment and ideally drawn in gate three, the mare maps to settle better than mid-field with cover.
Already a winner at the track, a trouble-free run here should see her hard to hold out in this contest.
