Sandown Racing Tips 18.08.2021 - Follow the Maher/Eustace stable

Sandown hosts a midweek meeting on Wednesday, August 18, and we have our four best bets. All four of our previewed runners come from the powerful Maher/Eustace stable, which could have a field day in Melbourne.
  • Race 2 1:00pm AEST – No. 6 Saucey Horsey
  • Race 4 2:10pm AEST – No. 1 Eaglemont
  • Race 5 2:45pm AEST – No. 6 Rapid Achiever
  • Race 7 3:55pm AEST – No. 3 Nikau Spur

Race 2 1:00pm AEST – No. 6 Saucey Horsey

The three-year-old daughter of So You Think looked good winning on debut at Donald and she looks capable of remaining unbeaten. She won by 3.5 lengths on a heavy surface, and although conditions are slightly better on Wednesday, we don’t think that lessens her chances of winning. She is bred to handle all conditions and she also won a trial on a synthetic surface, so she’s an adaptable type.

Having a strong rider in John Allen in the saddle helps and her opening odds have been taken. Bookmakers opened her at $2.60, which didn’t last long at all. Her current price is about as low as we would take, so it could pay to get stuck in before the odds shorten.

Race 4 2:10pm AEST – No. 1 Eaglemont

We’re prepared to give Eaglemont another chance after two placings since arriving in Australia. The Maher/Eustace-trained five-year-old ran third at Sandown in his Australian debut before running third behind Adonis Kick at Moe last start. He didn’t fully handle the heavy conditions and his best form has come on firmer tracks.

The well-bred son of Camelot stays in the same grade for this contest but rises in distance. Going from 2050m to 2400m suits the stayer and he placed over this distance in Ireland. Getting a 2kg claim is ideal and we expected him to be much shorter with bookmakers. The $3.60 is well worth taking as we priced him as a $2.40 chance.

Race 5 2:45pm AEST – No. 6 Rapid Achiever

The four-year-old mare did plenty right when winning on debut at Donald and form out of that meeting is well worth following. She scored by 3.3 lengths in the heavy conditions, and it was an impressive way to start her career. She also comes out of the Maher/Eustace stable, and the early betting support is a good sign. She showed good barrier speed in the win and sitting near the pace at Sandown is always a positive.

It’s another premium ride for John Allen and barrier two should allow him to settle handy and give punters a good sight.

Race 7 3:55pm AEST – No. 3 Nikau Spur

The fourth runner for the Maher/Eustace team is Nikau Spur, who has already won three of his eight career starts. He is a five-year-old son of Proisir who didn’t fire at Sandown last start, but it followed a win at the Hillside track, which is where they race on Wednesday. The win also came over 1500m, so he has plenty going for him.

Punters get each-way odds to enjoy for this contest and we think he should be shorter in the market. We wouldn’t be surprised to see his odds form considerably on race day.
