- Race 4: No.2 Captain Maverick
- Race 5: No.1 Need Some Luck
- Race 6: No.10 Makena
- Race 7: No.10 Mergeila
We have the best bets picked from across the meeting with a Best Bet and other value selections for Rosehill racecourse.
Race 4: No.2 Captain Maverick
The Chris Waller-trained Captain Maverick has found his mojo after three starts back and looks well placed here for back-to-back victories in this event.
Last start, the Irish-sired gelding was having his third race-start on Australian soil when he clobbered a BM72 field over 1800m on the Kensington track at Randwick.
Having improved at each start to date, James McDonald had the reins that day and rode him a treat, taking over inside the final 200m and going on to score by 1.5 lengths on the line.
He meets similar company here where he jumps from gate five and maps to settle near mid-field with cover.
Formerly trained by Dermot Weld, the lightly-raced four-year-old should be at his peak today after three runs into his first Australian campaign where J.Mac sticks with him for this assignment.
A trouble-free run here can see him going two-straight in this contest.
Race 5: No.1 Need Some Luck
The Peter Snowden-trained Need Some Luck is second-up today and ticks enough boxes to suggest he can find his third career win in this event.
Last start, the Rubick gelding resumed off a 12-week spell and did well to beat all but one home in a BM72 over 1250m at Canterbury.
Tommy Berry had the reins and did well to have the gelding within striking distance in the run home, only his lack of race condition depriving him of victory that day.
Snowden slaps the winkers on for the first time today as Kerrin McEvoy returns for his third ride on the four-year-old.
He does no early work from gate two where he maps to settle better than mid-field with cover.
Already a winner when second-up, his five starts at the 1200m have all ended in top-two finishes.
If he finds clean air in the run home, he should prove hard to hold out in this contest.
Race 6: No.10 Makena
Chris Waller saddles-up three runners here as we go with Makena who appears to be the strongest contender for the major prize in this event.
Last start, the well-bred Zoustar mare was second-up when she overpowered them to win a BM72 over 1400m at Randwick.
James McDonald was aboard for the fifth time, ringing-up his third podium finish on the mare.
Nicely drawn in gate four, she maps to settle better than mid-field with cover as J.Mac sticks with her for this assignment.
She meets similar company today and hasn’t been penalised in weight for that last start win, giving her a big advantage here.
Fitter for two runs back, she should prove hard to beat in this contest.
Race 7: No.10 Mergeila
Another from the Chris Waller stable is Mergeila who has impressed after two career-starts and looks well placed here for back-to-back victories in this event.
Last start, the American-sired filly had her second start and showed improvement when she broke through for her maiden win over 1250m at Canterbury.
With James McDonald aboard, he had the filly box-seating on settling where she took advantage of a split that appeared inside the final 200m and went on to win comfortably in the end.
She draws the middle of the field here in barrier eight where she maps to cross and settle in the first half-dozen.
It is a big class rise here as she takes on BM72 company but J.Mac sticks with her and she carries less weight for this assignment.
The three-year-old shows a lot of promise and even fitter for two runs to date, she can give this contest a real shake today.
