Race 2 1:25pm AEST – No. 6 Military Expert
Despite the betting drift, we’re confident Military Expert can make a winning debut. The Annabel Neasham-trained two-year-old won a trial at Wyong by 2.5 lengths and there is a lot to like about that performance. He stretched out nicely in the straight and the well-bred son of Redoute’s Choice looks to have a bright future.
Drawing barrier 13 isn’t ideal, but he could push forward with Tommy Berry in the saddle. If he can find the front without doing much work, he will be tough to beat. Punters should take the generous odds available for a promising type.
Race 3 2:00pm AEST – No. 5 Promise of Success
It was a stylish win posted by Promise of Success two back at Warwick Farm, and although she didn’t back it up, it’s a good form guide. The European import put two lengths on the field in heavy conditions and she was only 1.1 lengths behind the winner last start. It was a solid effort up in grade and she should only be fitter for the effort.
It’s another good ride for Tommy Berry and she won’t have to do much work from barrier three. She should sit just behind the speed and be presented with a run at the top of the straight. Facing a field of only seven is ideal and she will have no traffic problems.
Race 4 2:35pm AEST – No. 6 Yukon
One of the best-backed runners of the day is Yukon, which opened at $5 and has been smashed in markets. The Hawkes-trained three-year-old didn’t fire last start at Randwick, but this is a significant drop in class and he could improve his form immediately. The son of Vancouver scored two wins and two placings from four starts during his first campaign, so he’s classy at best.
One of those wins came at Moonee Valley against a talented field and he followed it up with a solid trial win at Warwick Farm. Punters should overlook his most recent effort and the big betting push is a fantastic sign. His odds will likely continue to shorten, so lock in the value available.
Race 6 3:25pm AEST – No. 9 Turnstyle
Value is with Turnstyle, which scored a win three back and her subsequent efforts are better than they look. The four-year-old daughter by Rubick finished last at Canterbury two starts back, but she was only 4.6 lengths behind the winner. Finishing second in that race was Hellenism, which has since scored a Saturday win.
She is a three-win mare that also owns six placings from 15 starts, so she is rarely too far away and she can defy the betting drift. Her opening odds of $4.20 have drifted considerably, but punters now getting value odds. Turnstyle is better than her odds reflect and barrier four is ideal. She should get a nice drag behind the speed and there are no superstars in this field, so she’s good enough to score.
