Race 2 13:25pm AEST – No. 5 Laurelin
Laurelin didn’t show much on debut when running sixth at Randwick, but the two-year-old filly was facing much harder opposition. The James Cummings-trained daughter of Lonhro was the $2.90 favourite to beat the likes of Four Moves Ahead, which would later perform at Group 1 level in Sydney. Although beaten by seven lengths, the experience should have done her some good.
She bounced back this preparation with a 3.8-length trial win at Gosford and she looks to have a bright future. Punters have once again come for her and with James McDonald in the saddle, that will help with the wide barrier draw.
Race 3 2:00pm AEST – No. 6 Canadian Spice
Canadian Spice missed the jump horribly at Randwick last start but we loved the way she hit the line. The Chris Waller-trained filly was forced to settle back over 1500m and although she was giving the leaders many lengths, so closed to finish only four lengths behind the winner. It was a nice effort and if she jumps on terms with them, she will go close.
The two-time winner handles wet conditions and the daughter of Vancouver gets the services of James McDonald, which is always positive. The betting support is there and that is a good sign. She wasn’t fancied in betting last time out, but bookmakers have respected that effort and we think she will handle this field with merit.
Race 6 3:45pm AEST – No. 4 Yukon
Yukon carried plenty of betting support at Randwick last start when finishing second behind Bring the Ransom. It was a solid outing from the three-year-old gelding that looked good last campaign with winning and placing twice. There is no doubting the talent of the gelding and we think he will handle the wet conditions. He scored a placing on a soft track last preparation and the track has improved throughout the week.
In-form jockey Brenton Avdulla takes the ride and he should get every chance from barrier four. It’s not the hardest field he’ll ever face and it’s good to see market confidence. He opened at $3.90 and has dropped a full point over the last 24 hours, which is a huge statement. Put him on top and watch for any further market moves.
Race 8 4:20pm AEST – No. 3 Irish Angel
Irish Angel continues to run well and the Waller-trained mare should be tough to beat again. The four-year-old daughter of Not a Single Doubt has figured in the finish at her last six starts, which includes back-to-back wins. She followed the wins with a second placing at Rosehill last start and she wasn’t far behind Magic Ruler in the heavy conditions.
Her best form comes on soft tracks and she is also a two-time winner at the distance, so there is a lot in her favour. Hugh Bowman takes the ride from barrier three and she should put herself in the race around the home turn before kicking clear. We’re not surprised by the shortening odds, so take the price before it drops.
