Race 4 No.1- First Thought
First Thought should be hard to beat in Race 4. The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper battled on a Heavy track up at Newcastle back in May but stepped out off a seven-week freshen up at Cranbourne over the 2025m on June 22 with an improved showing to finish 3rd. He settled back in that race and made a long and sustained run from the 600m to go 3.2 lengths slowed than standard benchmark, which is nearly four lengths better than the next best last start figures of any runner. The son of So You Think looks ready to peak.
Race 6 No.2- Inexorable
Inexorable has been flying since switching to the Synthetic and can just about make it a hat-trick of wins. The Grahame Begg-trained galloper has picked up two victories over the 1400m at Pakenham in the past month and closed off with the fastest last 200m to edge out Rich Lover late in the piece in the most recent of those. He gets up slightly in grade but might have improvement left to come at his fourth run this time in, while the step to the 1600m looks like it will suit.
Race 8 No.1- Legatus
Legatus is worth thought in Race 9. The Jim Moloney-trained galloper is better known as a stayer but I liked his performance when resuming over the 1400m here on June 16 when making up late ground to place 7th, beaten just two lengths. He has performed well over shorter trips early on in previous preparations and drops to BenchMark 58 for the first time, while the big claim brings him right into it.
Race 9 No.2- Shaalute
Shaalute can end the day a winner. The new addition to the Matt Laurie stable has had two runs since switching for two wins with both of those coming on the Synthetic at Ballarat. The first of those was a Class 1 ahead of Spirited Defence, who has since come out and won by four lengths. Shaalute has since missed out in narrow fashion behind Neon’s Last. This looks no harder and he draws to enjoy the perfect run from barrier 2 with the 2kg claimer, Emily Pozman, to ride.
