Race 1 1:00pm AEST – No. 2 Boromir
The three-year-old gelding was spelled following a debut run for second at Horsham. It was a solid effort for the well-backed favourite and being sent for a spell is typically a good sign. He should come back a stronger type and the son of Brazen Beau looks to have grown into his body nicely.
Drawing barrier two with Dean Yendall in the saddle is ideal and we’re not surprised by the money coming for him. He opened at $3.10 and those odds have been snapped up, so it could pay to take the current odds available before they shorten.
Race 4 2:30pm AEST – No. 2 Decurio
Punters will have to take short odds for Decurio, but the former New Zealand runner looks the goods on Monday. He finished second on debut at Rotorua before being sold to Australian interests and finishing second at Warrnambool. The run was solid in defeat and he was heavily backed to score, so there is good stable and market confidence.
It’s the same again for this run after being well-backed to score. The son of Niagara is knocking on the door of posting a win and this field is there for the taking. He should have the class edge, and although the odds are skinny, he can boost multi-bet payouts.
Race 5 3:00pm AEST – No. 10 Jens
The form behind Jens’ last-start win stacks up brilliantly and she is capable of going back-to-back. The three-year-old filly scored a one-length win at Geelong over Zidler, which subsequently broke maiden grades at Sandown on Wednesday. It’s a good sign for the John McArdle-trained filly that is bred to rise through the grades.
She is a daughter of Toronado that will relish the rise in distance and drawing barrier three allows her to find a good position in the run and hit the line with power. Punters have cottoned on to her chances in early markets and her odds should firm closer to start time. It’s the hardest field she has faced, but she’s a progressive type that is showing no signs of slowing down.
Race 7 4:00pm AEST – No. 7 Ginny Ann
Ginny Ann might not be the most consistent runner going around at Murtoa on Monday, but she is capable of producing the goods on any given day. The four-year-old mare by War owns two wins and nine placings, so she has been around the mark and her win three back at Warracknabeal came by 4.8 lengths. Her two subsequent runs have been only fair, but she’s enigmatic and a change in track could help.
She has yet to run at Murtoa and that can often trigger a better run. The soft track conditions are ideal as she has yet to miss a win or placing from four attempts. Dropping in class is another positive factor as she struggled in BM64 grade, so running at BM58 level should be a catalyst for a form turnaround.
