We get a a little look towards the spring on Saturday at Royal Randwick with the running of the Missile Stakes. a Group Two event where a small, but quality field has been assembled.

Worth $200,000, this sprint is both a spring lead-up and a strong event in itself, with Group One winners having won the last three editions (Pierata, Alizee and Eduardo).

Fasika is the $2.60 favourite with TopSport, a mare that generally fires fresh and the daughter of So You Think was a first-up winner over this track and trip in the autumn.

2021 Missile Stakes Tips

Best Bet - Phobetor

Despite being a drifting favourite first-up off a long layoff, this five-year-old was impressive at Doomben, letting go late with a big turn-of-foot on June 16 ahead of a Ramornie Handicap tilt at Grafton where he was a well-supported market elect.

Unfortunately, just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Phobetor who was uncharacteristically a little tardy away, before working and being posted wide the trip, beaten late by Southern Lad, albeit still managed a two-length margin on third.

With any luck, there's no doubting he wins that sprint feature very comfortably and while this a step up in class, he has threatened to be at least stakes class in only a short career so far and ideally from a better start, can be the fit on-pacer to race alongside Fasika early.

Next Best Bet - Viridine

Winning three of his last four attempts over the winter of 2020, this Godolphin sprinter was becoming a real model of consistency ahead of a November 28 return which was terrific against the pattern (also spotted 8kg to the first two home).

Although still racing consistently, I suspect there may have been some setbacks with Viridine following that given the spaces between many of those performances, and he was just a few lengths off his best prior to his Bletchingly Stakes run on July 24.

Visually, it looked an improved effort while the clock backed it up, with the seven-year-old recording the fastest last 200m of that entire Caulfield program, so hard fit and with the ability to sprint off any tempo, this is as good a chance as he'll get to record win number 10.

Verdict

I've always had plenty of time for Fasika and she's definitely a winning chance, but there's some holes in her autumn form, especially for what is quite a handy sprint here, so the $2.60 is certainly short enough.

At bigger prices around the favourite, we'll spec both Phobetor and Viridine.
