- Race 3: No.4 Mimessi
- Race 7: No.5 Starzam
- Race 8: No.5 Zanardee’s Lane
We have the best bets picked from across the meeting with a Best Bet and other value selections for Grafton racetrack.
Race 2: No.2 Corvalist
Locally-trained by Tony Newing, Corvalist has been knocking on the door for a victory and today looks ideally placed to get the job done in this event.
Last start, the Capitalist gelding found the podium for the ninth time in his 12 starts when he finished a close-up third in a Maiden Plate over 1110m at Lismore.
Matthew Mc Guren had him box-seating on settling and in the run home, fought like a caged tiger but was edged out on the line in a four-horse battle, leaving him with the minor prize for the race.
McGuren sticks with him today where he draws nicely in gate three and maps to be near the speed again.
Back on home soil and a trouble-free run here can see him challenging for that illusive first win today.
Race 3: No.4 Mimessi
The Glen Innes-based Mimessi is four starts into this preparation and looks well placed here to get claim his third career victory today.
Last start, the Divine Prophet gelding had some admirers in the market ($16 into $11) when he finished a close-up third behind Rothesay’s Ruby in a BM58, here over 2200m.
Settling near the tail of the field, he spotted the leaders 10 lengths and with Jon Grisedale in the saddle, made ground on the inside before the turn, then ran home strongly to grab that last podium spot, taking home the minor prize in the end.
Grisedale sticks with him today and from gate three, maps to settle near mid-field on the fence in this smaller field.
Pre-post favourite (Rothesay’s Ruby) is scratched from the event, leaving the four-year-old with a better chance of adding another win to his resume and at his peak today, he looks the testing material in this contest.
Race 7: No.5 Starzam
Having his third start for the Fleur Blanch stable, Starzam will run fitter for those first two starts and gets his chance to impress in this event.
Last start, the Starspangledbanner gelding put in an eye-catching performance when he came from last to finish mid-field in a BM82 over 1200m at Coffs Harbour.
He drew the carpark in gate 12 (of 13) and settled last, a dozen lengths off the speed and could still see them all on straightening before weaving his way through traffic to beat half of them home on the line.
His last 200m was most impressive, showing a good turn-of-foot with apprentice Siena Grima in the saddle that day.
Drawn much better today in gate seven, he maps to settle near mid-field with cover as Luke Rolls is legged aboard for the first time.
Placed three times when third-up previously, the step-up to the 1410m distance today looks ideal and with a clear run to the line, he can give this a real shake and looks well worth an each-way ticket in this contest.
Race 8: No.5 Zanardee’s Lane
Sally Taylor saddles-up the Coffs Harbour-based galloper here who resumes after nine months off the scene but ticks enough boxes to suggest he can figure in this event.
Last start, the Raphael's Cat gelding ended his last campaign by facing city class competition for the first time and wasn’t disgraced finishing mid-field in the Class 3 Hcp over 1200m at Randwick.
Jumping from gate 13 (of 15), he was never on the track, caught five-deep to the turn, then pratted even wider on straightening, he did a mighty job to finish ahead of half the field in the end.
Covering more ground than the early explorers, he was beaten just over two lengths on the line with Regan Bayliss in the saddle.
Back to country class today, he draws much better in gate five where he maps to settle mid-field with cover.
Courtney Bellamy steered him to victory in a recent trial and sticks with him for this assignment.
The six-year-old is a track specialist, boasting two wins and three minor placings from his starts at the track and already a winner when first-up, he looks the testing material in this contest.
