George Main Stakes Tips & Runner-by-Runner Preview

Group 1 racing continues in Sydney with the George Main Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

It's only a field of nine, but it will have big implications on the spring carnival. Verry Elleegant is all the rage at a short quote, so can any runner beat the Kiwi?

We look at the form of every runner in the 2021 George Main Stakes.

Kolding

The Chris Waller-trained gelding hasn't been at his best form this campaign, including a ninth last time out. He would need to improve to be considered a winning chance in future spring races, and he looks held here.

Think It Over

Love the way he dug deep to chase down the front runner last time out. It was a statement and career-best win for Think It Over, so he can't be left out. He looks like the biggest danger to the favourite with the right run in transit.

Cascadian

His tactics of getting back and storming home only work so often. He has hit the line nicely in two runs back from a spell, but we don't think the pace will be hit in the small field. He's a nice type, but the conditions of this race don't suit.

Star of the Seas

Better when third behind Zaaki last start, albeit 2.8 lengths from the winner. He is an eight-time winner, but only one of those has come at Randwick. He's better suited to racing at Rosehill, so wait for that occasion.

Riodini

The former Kiwi almost got the chocolates last start before being run down by Think It Over. An encouraging effort but this is harder. Yet to win from five attempts at the distance, but he's rarely too far away. Chance at value odds.

Lion's Roar

Unsure if he has matured into a four-year-old following a disappointing fresh up performance. The jury is out with Lion's Roar, so we can't have him in selections. Bookmakers agree, and after opening at $34, his odds have drifted to $41.

Verry Elleegant

She is the class act of the field and she is progressing towards $10 million in stakes. The Waller-trained mare was only narrowly beaten by Mo'unga last start, who has since run well at Group 1 level in Melbourne. She is the class act, hence the odds.

Shout the Bar

The Waterhouse/Bott-trained runner isn't suited to this style of racing and she could struggle to keep up. We would prefer to see her over longer distances, which should be the case later in the spring.

Hungry Heart

Value odds are available for a talented daughter of Frankel who has won at the top level. We don't think she's purely an age-group runner, so we're expecting a big 2021 season from the four-time winner. She could run into the money at double-figure odds, so keep her safe.

Verdict

Verry Elleegant is the best horse in the field and she should be too good. Her ability is outstanding and her effort for second fresh-up was terrific. Punters have to take short odds, but she should justify them.

Think It Over and Hungry Heart are solid each-way chances.
