The best of the best hurdlers meet every year in the Galleywood Hurdle and this year is no exception at the Warrnambool Carnival on Wednesday.

Warrnambool Stream: Watch every race from Warrnambool at Sportsbet

Some Are Bent, Black and Bent, Gotta Take Care and Gobstopper are some of the stars to have won this race in recent years. Who will take out the 2021 edition?

1. Instigator T: Aaron Purcell, J: Braidon Small

Clearly the value in the race. Last time he met Saunter Boy he beat him by sixteen lengths. Now, that was on exceptionally heavy ground that won’t be like what they race on here, but he showed last time at Pakenham that he is far from a mudlark only, winning by seven lengths and showing a brilliant turn of foot to win running away. The knock on this horse was always that he didn’t like to win (1 from 29 on the flat, despite having placed in country cups and Saturday races), having won his last two jumping races by a combined margin of 23 lengths we can safely say the monkey is off his back.

2. Blood And Sand T: K & G Mayberry, J: Tom Ryan

Showed terrific ability winning both of his starts over obstacles back in 2018. The problem is, he lines up here without a race start in almost two and a half years and while he has trialled well, I couldn’t back him on that basis.

3. Britannicus T: Symon Wilde, J: Arron Lynch

Handy hurdler but he only fires on firm tracks so his scope is limited. Won well at Oakbank but that form is indifferent then he was given a hiding by Flying Agent last time over hurdles. That form reference might look okay except Flying Agent is far better over steeples. I think he is more like a 20-1 chance unless by some miracle the track comes up a Soft 5.

4. Double Bluff T: Aaron Purcell, J: Paul Hamblin

Looked really good winning on the opening day of the season but both runs since then have been really poor. He would require a massive turnaround.

5. Mr One Eleven T: E V Musgrove, J: Darryl Horner (Jnr)

This horse tends to be highly underrated and I bet he beats more home than vice versa. Can run in the top four if the breaks go his way.

6. Saunter Boy T: C Maher & D Eustace, J: Steven Pateman

Put the writing on the wall for a big campaign with a great first up run at Bendigo and followed up with a dominant win at Pakenham, in similar time to Instigator. Not hard to see why he is favourite, albeit there shouldn’t be that much between him and Instigator in the betting, even though he is 3Kg better off since they last met.

7. The Midnight Shift T: Clayton Douglas, J: Clayton Douglas

Five-year-old ex-Kiwi who has done plenty of racing (this is start 40) but his flat form coming into this has been handy. He won his last two in NZ before joining the Clayton Douglas stable and his trials have been terrific. This is a big ask at his Australian jumping debut but if there is to be an upset I suspect he is the one to cause it.

8. Robbie's Star T: P A Chow, J: Ronan Short

Phenomenal wet tracker (9 wins from 28 on heavy) who wasn’t well suited by the drying ground last time at Pakenham. His flat win prior was good at Ballarat. Would come into calculations if the track came up a Heavy 10 but that looks unlikely. Place chance on firmer going.

9. Coleridge T: E V Musgrove, J: Aaron Kuru

He runs in everything, but he looks severely outclassed.

10. The Statesman T: Brett Scott, J: Will Gordon

Fair to say he has been a massive disappointment as a jumper thus far in Australia. Flattered by the 2.75 length margin between him and Saunter Boy last time, but he is a place chance.
