Flemington Racing Tips 22.09.2021 - Victorian Derby Preview

Flemington hosts an eight-race card on Wednesday, September 22, and we have our four best bets available. The Victorian Derby Preview is the must-see race on the card, which includes plenty of excellent betting races.
  • Race 2 1:35pm No. 4 Nominator
  • Race 4 2:45pm No. 2 Ashford Street
  • Race 6 3:55pm No. 8 Inverell
  • Race 7 4:30pm No. 3 Mr Brightside

Race 2 1:35pm No. 4 Nominator

Nominator is on debut for the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott team. The son of Zoustar has had no trials for this debut effort, which can be a good sign. It means he’s ready to fire and there has been good betting support since markets opened. The two-year-old opened at $8.50 and was steadily backed into $7, which is a sizable move.

He is a well-bred runner who gets the services of Craig Williams, which is another positive aspect. There are plenty of unknowns about this field, but Nominator is the value runner and he should give punters a good sight down the Flemington straight.

Race 4 2:45pm No. 2 Ashford Street

Value is with Ashford Street, which owns three wins and two placings from eight starts. The Simon Ryan-trained four-year-old scored his most recent win at Bendigo two starts back when winning by a length over Crestani. That form stacks up nicely and he has since finished second at Cranbourne behind See You in Spring, who is a spring stakes contender.

All three of his wins have come over this distance and getting a 3kg claimer in the saddle is ideal. His opening odds of $6.50 didn’t last long, which isn’t surprising. He looks well-placed to get some of the prize and punters still get each-way odds to enjoy.

Race 6 3:55pm No. 8 Inverell

Inverell has been the subject of big bets and it’s not hard to see why. Bookmakers opened the three-year-old at $8, which was an incredible price given his debut win at Sale. The son of Shocking won by 1.8 lengths over Lunar Mach, and he has since won a trial at Cranbourne by two lengths over The General. He looks to have a bright future and rising in distance holds no fears.

The Derby Preview is always a wide-open betting affair but he has been backed in from $8 to $4.20. It takes a lot of money to move the market that much, and we think it could be stable money coming for the favourite. We wouldn’t be leaving him off our tickets on Wednesday.

Race 7 4:30pm No. 3 Mr Brightside

Mr Brightside is shooting for five consecutive wins and we wouldn’t be betting against the talented type. He started his winning streak at Geelong in July before posting wins at Sandown and last time out at Moonee Valley. The son of Bullbars showed his quality last start when winning by 1.3 lengths over a quality field.

The four-year-old is being held in check by the trainers, which is a good decision. He has been steadily rising through the grades, and despite facing a tough field on Wednesday, he has the most upside of any runner in this field.
