Race 5: No.8  Voracious

The Tony Gollan-trained Voracious has resumed in great touch and second-up today looks in the mix for back-to-back success in this event.

Last start, the Maurice gelding resumed off an 11-week spell and had his first start for the Gollan stable when he easily accounted for a BM58 field over 1300m at Toowoomba.

She had to do it the hard way, jumping from the outside gate (10), and after working early, Angela Jones had her leading on settling.

Setting an even pace, she was left alone in front and in the run home, just had too many guns for them, going on to win by 1.5 lengths on the line.

Jones remains aboard for today’s assignment where the four-year-old draws much better in gate three and maps to be on the speed at barrier rise.

The mare is untried on wet tracks which appears to be the only cloud over her claims today but if she handles the conditions, a repeat of that first-up effort will see her very hard to run down in this contest.

Race 8: No.12  Valetudo

The Chris Waller-trained Valetudo is in top-shelf form this preparation and ticks enough boxes to suggest she is the one to beat in this event.

Last start, the Zoustar mare rang-up career win number two when she took out a BM70, here over 1200m on a rain affected track.

Ridden a treat by Andrew Mallyon, she settled mid-field, one off the fence, and in the run home, took the gaps that came, finishing over the top of them in the final 100m to claim the major prize.

She drops in grade today, taking on a BM65 field (over the 1200m) and has Damien Thornton as the new pilot.

Ideally drawn in gate three, she maps to settle in the first half-dozen and with a clear run to the line, she should prove hard to hold out in this contest.

Race 9: No.1  Express Payment

Robert Heathcote saddles-up Express Payment here who drops in grade and looks drawn to collect the cash in this event.

Last start, the Rich Enuff gelding came off a good win in BM62 company when he was disgraced, finishing fifth in a BM65 over 1650m at Doomben.

From gate five (of 11), Jake Bayliss pushed forward and settled him outside the leader and in the process, dropped the whip.

On straightening, the four-year-old was still there challenging but in the run home couldn’t stave off the challenges, still finishing stoutly, beaten just two lengths on the line.

He takes on Class 2 company here with Bayliss remaining in charge for this assignment and gets the gun-run from gate one where Bayliss will have the choice to lead or box-seat on settling.

Placed at his only previous visit to Eagle Farm, he will be at his peak today and with the dream draw, looks set to bounce back in this contest.
