Doomben Tips - May 22

Josh Waites picks out the best bets for Doomben Cup Day.

Race 1 – Mittys Benchmark Handicap BM80

Dual acceptor, this 4yo gelding out of More Than Ready continues to work soundly through the grades. After a luckless campaign, ‘The Prince’ returned from a 6 month spell to win comfortably in a BM-68 at Kembla Grange over 1500m. Although the field was not flash, it was the dominant way in which he went about his work - powering home in a slick 33.65 over the last 600m.

A second-up win at Gosford over the mile, under soft going, completed the unbeaten start to the campaign. This performance was equally impressive, where he torched his rivals to be eased down by 3 lengths on the line.

After such a positive start to this campaign, all roads lead to 2000m and the on-pace racing style of this bloke will suit Doomben perfectly.

Race 4 – IPG Marketing Solutions Darby Mccarthy

Lightly raced gelding prepared by the little known stable of Maryann Brosnan. This horse was dynamic on debut at the Sunshine Coast where it came from stone motherless on the turn to get up in the last bound. Followed that performance with an effortless last 200m in the straight to overpower his rivals when resuming over the 1000m at Eagle Farm.

A sharp rise in class in the Mick Dittman Plate over 1110m did not phase this Gelding - he finished a luckless 5th, with jockey Robbie Fradd still searching for the way out - 100m past the winning post.

This field presents its stiffest test to date but given the right trail from the alley, this horse should give punters a great sight for their hard earned.

Race 5 – Magic Millions Pam O’Neill Stakes

Resuming here after short break, this proven WFA performer is without question a class mare.  A Group 2 trophy graces the trophy cabinet after winning the Peter Young Stakes in February at Caulfield, completing the trip in a sharp 1.49.64 over the 1800m. The rapid rise continued with a creditable 4th amongst Group 1 company in the Australian Cup against top class opposition.

A recent barrier trial under the expert guidance of Craig Williams has primed this 4yo mare out of Epaulette for this first-up assault and Danny O’Brien will be desperate to restore some pride for the southern invaders, after last week’s dominant performance by the maroon brigade.

Although presented with an awkward alley, the experienced Williams will encourage the horse to press on and find a customary forward position. With 6 wins and 4 minor placings from 16 career starts, this assignment will be no tougher than previous and Paradee should add to her more than impressive strike rate.
