  • Just For Show returned strong, finishing second in Race 3.
  • Sugar Coat showed potential, excelling in finishing splits in Race 4.
  • Hughes showed resilience in Race 9, hinting at future success with better luck.

Racing in Melbourne was at Caulfield on Saturday May 3 for a nine-race programme.
  • Race 3- 3YO (1100m)- Just For Show
  • Race 4- 3YO (1400m)- Sugar Coat
  • Race 9- BenchMark 84- (1400m)

Here are our blackbookers and horses to follow from the meeting.

Race 3- 3YO (1100m)- Just For Show

It was a solid return by Just For Show in Race 3 of the day at Caulfield. The Team Hayes galloper was appearing for the first time since taking out the VOBIS Gold Carat (1200m) at Moonee Valley last December and settled on the speed before sticking on to fill the exacta behind Landmark. He was conceeding 4kg to that horse and put a big gap on the rest of them. A winner of three of nine, he can go one better at his next start.

Race 4- 3YO (1400m)- Sugar Coat

The Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman-trained galloper was never really in it in Race 4, due to the slow tempo in front of him but he closed off well for 5th in the small field, beaten by three lengths. The son of Exceedance was second up after a promising debut preparation that saw him win his first two starts and produced the fastest last 400m and second fastest last 200m. At the third run of his last campaign he was a big improver on benchmark figures and he is looking to peak at his next start.

Race 9- BenchMark 84- (1400m)

He missed out as a $2.90 favourite but I wouldn't be giving up on Hughes just yet. The Gavin Bedggood gelding was posted three-wide no cover throughout on a fast tempo and did well to stick on for a minor placing behind Sunshineinmypocket. He was stepping up from BenchMark 70 company after a couple of wins in March and April. The five-year-old can go close in similar grade at his next attempt with better luck next time around.
