Sandown Racing Tips 8.09.2021 - Back the Classy Midweekers

Sandown hosts a midweek meeting on September 8, and we have our four best bets available. Our tips include four well-backed runners that could have successful spring campaigns, including Sugartown and Decent Raine, who have already been exposed to top-level racing in town.
  • Race 1 1:00pm AEST – No. 6 Semper Fortis
  • Race 3 2:10pm AEST – No. 11 Decent Raine
  • Race 4 2:45pm AEST – No. 4 Snapper
  • Race 5 3:20pm AEST – No. 3 Sugartown

Race 1 1:00pm AEST – No. 6 Semper Fortis

Semper Fortis owns two second placings from two starts and he’s more than capable of going one better. The Busuttin/Young-trained colt by Tavistock ran second on debut at Cranbourne behind Bewitchingly before falling short by a nose behind Aeecee Dame. There is little wrong with that form, and we expect it to stack up nicely at this level.

We are surprised by the odds available. Bookmakers are offering $3.50 for a talented runner, and despite the likes of Character and Rhinoceros looking to have potential, Semper Fortis could have the brightest future. Watch for late betting moves with this runner.

Race 3 2:10pm AEST – No. 11 Decent Raine

We expect the odds of Decent Raine to shorten considerably on race day. The Maher/Eustace-trained three-year-old showed her class when winning by five lengths at Echuca, and we’re prepared to give her another chance following her Moonee Valley failure. She did a lot of work on the pace and weakened out of it late but dropping to midweek level should do the trick.

The daughter of Dissident has been around the top flight thoroughbreds throughout her career. She ran at Caulfield on debut and followed it up with a sixth at Flemington behind Tycoon Humma. That is excellent form, and she clearly goes on top against this level of opposition.

Race 4 2:45pm AEST – No. 4 Snapper

Snapper is a speedy gelding by Power, who came to Australia from New Zealand with potential. The Mike Moroney-trained gelding owns two wins and two placings from eight starts, including consecutive wins at Moonee Valley last preparation. He scored fresh up by 3.3 lengths to break maiden grades which is a good sign for this race. It was followed by another win when carrying 60.5kg, so dropping to 57kg is ideal.

There is nothing wrong with his form and dropping to 1000m is only going to help his chances. When he has been defeated, he has often tired over the concluding stages. The short course distance is right up his alley, so we’re more than happy with the each-way odds available.

Race 5 3:20pm AEST – No. 3 Sugartown

Class is with Sugartown, who scored back-to-back wins at Bendigo before rising in class. The four-year-old mare by Shamus Award finished seventh at Flemington behind Curran before placing in two subsequent runs at Caulfield. She was only a half-length behind Belsielle before running a long neck behind Awapuni Princess.

She was exposed to some tough races early on in her career, so dropping to midweek company should be right up her alley. Barrier eight is tough over 1000m, but she will likely try to push forward and run them into the ground. Punters get a fair price given her class.
