Sandown Racing Tips for 11.08.2021 - Back Craig Williams

Sandown features an eight-race card on Wednesday, August 11, and it could pay to follow Victorian jockey Craig Williams, who rides three of our four selections. The only runner he doesn't ride is an odds-on favourite that should be miles too good for them.
  • Race 2 1:00pm AEST – No. 5 Sapphire Crown
  • Race 5 2:45pm AEST – No. 5 Mr Brightside
  • Race 6 3:20pm AEST – No. 7 Tuvalu
  • Race 8 4:30pm AEST – No. 10 Ziavera

Race 2 1:00pm AEST – No. 5 Sapphire Crown

Sapphire Crown has attracted interest in betting markets and it could have something to do with his unbeaten fresh-up record. The five-year-old son of Hallowed Crown owns two fresh wins from two attempts and his most recent came at Flemington when beating a Saturday-quality field. He owns three wins and three placings from nine starts overall, including a placing at Sandown.

It’s good to see betting support come his way and getting into the race with only 54kg is a bonus. He also gets Craig Williams in the saddle, so there are plenty of positive factors in his favour.

Race 5 2:45pm AEST – No. 5 Mr Brightside

Form is with Mr Brightside, who has won his last two starts. The former New Zealand runner came to Australia after running fifth on debut at Matamata and his form since has been excellent. His Australian debut was a second placing behind Toomuchtobear before rattling off consecutive wins at Geelong and Sandown. The son of Bullbars has beaten subsequent winners, so his form stacks up nicely and we’re not surprised the money coming for him.

It’s another quality ride for Craig Williams, who could have a big day on Wednesday. His odds opened at $2.10 and we expect his current odds to firm to around $1.80 on race day. It could pay to get stuck into the price before others do.

Race 6 3:20pm AEST – No. 7 Tuvalu

Punters climbed into the opening quote of $1.70, but even at $1.55, we’re interested. Tuvalu is easily the best horse in this race and we can’t see him getting beaten. The Lindsay Smith-trained gelding won his first two starts at Warrnambool and Sandown before taking on a hot field at Flemington and finishing an unlucky second behind the talented I’m Thunderstruck. He then finished second behind I’m Thunderstruck at Moonee Valley, so the form is outstanding.

We’re not sure why he’s lining up in midweek grades when he could be running at Caulfield, but connections could be looking for an easy kill and they should get it. Don’t be frightened by the odds.

Race 8 4:30pm AEST – No. 10 Ziavera

The five-year-old mare is always around the mark and is looking to cap off four consecutive second placings. She finished second at Sandown last time out behind Brazen Bully, so we’re expecting that form to hold up nicely at the midweek level this season. She owns two wins and seven placings from 12 starts, and she has yet to miss a win or placing at the track and distance.

Craig Williams takes the ride and he is the jockey worth following at the meeting. Punters get fair odds from bookmakers and her odds have been shortening throughout the week, so it could pay to jump on.
