- Race 6: King Of Sparta
Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?
Race 3: Good Sort
The Chris Waller-trained filly was second-up on Saturday and after drawing the outside gate (13) ran around as a $26 chance but turned plenty of heads with her bold performance.
Facing her first black-type challenge in Group 3 company, she missed the jump, leaving Zac Lloyd to cross and find a sit near the rear, eventually settling third-last, eight lengths ff the speed.
Sticking to the fence, Lloyd weaved his way through the gaps as they came and inside the last 200m, looked a potential winner but was checked and squeezed out of the final gap that closed as quickly as is it appeared, leaving the filly out of stride.
She recovered in time for a final charge, seeing her grab third prize on the line.
Robbed of victory, she is a winner when second-up and it will play to stick with her for a few more yet.
Race 4: Lekvarte
The Joe Pride-trained mare was second-up on Saturday where she drew gate 14 (of 15) where Josh Parr crossed and settled her last, a dozen lengths off the lead.
Still seeing them all as they straightened, Parr go her moving and found the gaps at the right time and inside the last 200m, she hit top gear and passed them all to score an impressive win in Group 3 company.
She is already a winner when third-up and coming off that big win, she has plenty more to offer this preparation.
Race 6: King Of Sparta
The I Am Invincible gelding resumed on Saturday after six months off the scene and was up against from the outset where he drew the car park in gate 17 (of 18).
James McDonald rode him in all three trials since returning to work and took the reins for this Group 3 contest.
Never on the track, McDonald settled him worse than mid-field and four-wide to the turn where he came even wider to find clean air.
The race-leader (Overpass) was off and gone for the prize, but McDonald had the Peter Snowden-trained galloper in hot pursuit and too his credit, took lengths off the podium finishers, finishing fourth, just over two lengths in arrears over the line.
He will be well worth following from here as he is a three-time winner when second-up and with a better draw and fitter now, he looks a blackbook entry for sure.
