Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Randwick on June 7.
  • Race 4:  Shropshire Lad
  • Race 8:  Kazou
  • Race 10:  Queen Of The Mile

Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?

Race 4:  Shropshire Lad

The Rod Northam-trained gelding was second-up on Saturday and impressed greatly when finishing a close-up second in the Class 3 Highway Hcp over 1100m.

After jumping well, he was trapped wide from the outset and was never closer than three horses from the fence with Reece Jones in the saddle.

Covering more ground than the early explorers, the three-year-old did a mighty job to finish less than a head away from victory with the winner (Bengal) never spending a cent as stuck to the fence the entire trip.

Northam’s youngster is already a winner when second-up and with a little more luck in future, looks destined to win again in the near future.

Race 8:  Kazou

The Chris Waller-trained mare was first-up on Saturday after more than 10 months off the scene when she turned plenty of heads on her way to finishing fifth in the Listed event over 1100m.

Drawn wide in gate 10 (of 11), she settled last and four-deep without cover to the turn, before tracking even wider to find clean air.

Inside the final 300m, she could still see them all and while no chance of winning, still finished like a train and passed half of them before crossing the line in fifth place, beaten just over two lengths on the post.

A super effort considering and already a winner both second and third-up, she looks towards a little more ground now and is well worth following.

Race 10:  Queen Of The Mile

The Michael Freedman-trained mare was first-up since February  and turned heads with her strong finishing effort in the BM78 over 1000m.

Settling last from barrier rise, she spotted the front runners 10 lengths approaching the turn where Jace McMurray kept her on the fence before peeling out to find some galloping room.

The four-year-old showed a solid turn-of-foot in the run home and was in a position to challenge for a podium spot but just weakened over the final 50m, leaving her with fourth prize in the race.

The 1000m was always going to prove a struggle on fresh legs and the wet track didn’t help either.

The mare is a two-time winner when second-up and given a dry track and a little more ground, she will prove a better prospect over her next few starts.
