Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Randwick on July 27.
- Race 1: Sakima
- Race 8: Yorkshire
- Race 9: Etna Rosso
Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?
Race 1: Sakima
The Team Snowden-trained filly was second-up on Saturday, coming off an impressive first-up win in a two-year-old Maiden over 1100m.
Unable to go the early pace, the Snitzel filly dropped out to settle four lengths last with Tyler Schiller in the saddle.
On the turn, Schiller kept her hard-up against the fence, then in the run home, set sail after the leader (and race-favourite) Tarpaulin who prevailed in the run home but had his lead reduced significantly by the filly.
She has plenty of upside and looks well worth following for a few more yet.
Race 8: Yorkshire
The Snitzel gelding was having his second race start on Saturday, coming off an impressive debut win where he put four lengths on them at Hawkesbury and did well to finish third in a much harder BM72 on a Heavy 8.
Leading inside the final 200m, race-favourite (Kerguelen) shifted out and sandwiched the three-year-old, knocking him out of commission as a winning chance, but he showed plenty of fight to hang on for the minor prize in the race.
It was a solid effort, considering the circumstances and he looks well worth following for a few more yet.
Race 9: Etna Rosso
The Chris Waller-trained galloper was fresh off a lengthy five-month absence on Saturday and looked in need of the run, still finishing third in the BM78 contest.
With apprentice Ben Osmond aboard, the four-year-old settled second-last six off the pace to the turn where Osmond eased him off the fence and crossed heels to find clean air.
He found some running room inside the final 200m but initially wouldn’t run straight, leaving Osmond to stop riding him before straightening his line, where he then hit the line well to grab the minor prize, beaten just over two lengths on the line.
He has placed when second-up and won when third-up so it should pay to keep him safe for a few more starts.
