Randwick Blackbookers

Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Randwick on February 8.
  • Race 3:  Algorithmic
  • Race 5:  Fugitiva
  • Race 10:  Rockola

Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?

Race 3:  Algorithmic

The Team Hawkes-trained new comer had his first start on Saturday and impressed all over the track with super effort that saw the Zoustar colt finish fourth in the Lonhro Plate for two-year-olds.

From gate nine (of 11), Tyler Schiller settled him last, eight lengths off the speed where he trailed on the fence.

Turning for home, he could still see all of them as Schiller stayed inside and played for luck, looking for runs and after running into traffic, finally found clean air and although no chance on winning, still hit the line well to finish an eye-catching fourth as a $51 unwanted outsider.

He could need 1200m to produce his best so stick with him, his debut run was full of merit.

Race 5:  Fugitiva

The Team Price-trained four-year-old was fresh off a 14-week spell and after two trials wasn’t disgraced when finishing fifth in the BM78 over 1300m.

Slowly away, Chad Schofield settled the mare third-last in the 14-strong field, eight lengths off the speed.

Turning for home, she could see all but two of them as Schofield threaded his way through traffic and once clear, she hit the line well to finish fifth, beaten just 1.5 lengths on the line.

Already a winner when second and third-up, the Supido mare has plenty of upside about her and looks well worth following this time in.

Race 10:  Rockola

Unwanted in the market ($26), the Anthony Cummings-trained gelding returned to the track on Saturday after more than 12 months off the scene and did well to finish third in the BM78 Hcp over 1200m.

From gate 10 (of 13), he settled near mid-field but was trapped four and five horses wide to the turn.

He straightened up even wider and despite covering more ground than the early explorers, Tyler Schiller drove him to the line where he finished strongly enough to claim the minor prize in the race, beaten less than a length on the line.

If he drew a gate, he probably wins the race.

He will only improve off that first-up effort and looks a promising type boasting a win and three minor placings from he five career starts to date and is one well worth following.
