Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Randwick on April 12.
- Race 1: Spicy Lu
- Race 4: Within The Law
- Race 10: Zaszou
Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?
Race 1: Spicy Lu
It was a big pay day for Queanbeyan trainer Nick Olive on Saturday when his two-year-filly led all the way to win the Listed Fernhill Mile.
Ridden a treat by Rachel King, she set a slow pace up front and led them into the straight where King asked her for more and from there it was a procession as she went on to win by almost two lengths in the end.
She remains unbeaten after completing the hat-trick on Saturday and she looks the real deal after leading from barrier to box in Listed company.
Showing signs of a bright future, it is strongly recommended that a place in your black books should be found for this young lady.
Race 4: Within The Law
The Bjorn Baker-trained filly bounced back with a vengeance on Saturday (after failing to finish in the Golden Slipper) as she turned plenty of heads with her run to the line.
The two-year-old trailed the race favourite (and eventual winner, Tempted) into the home straight and although spotting the leaders five lengths, she flew over the final 100m and arrived in time to grab third prize, finishing less than two lengths from Tempted on the line.
She did win the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) three starts back and now showing no ill effects of her misfortune in the Slipper, looks back to her best and is well worth a slot in the black book.
Race 10: Zaszou
The Phillip Stokes-trained mare was second-up on Saturday and really caught the eye with her big finish in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes.
From gate nine (of 11), Craig Williams settled her last, eight lengths off the speed where she remained until the turn.
Williams then pulled her wide where she gave a final effort and whilst never a winning chance, took lengths off them over the final 100m, finishing a gallant sixth, just 1.5 lengths off the winner, who ran the 1200m in 1:09.2,
Already a winner when third-up, she can only improve on that effort and the four-year-old will find a race to suit in the near future.
