Newcastle Racing Tips for 11.08.2021 - 4 Best Bets

Newcastle hosts a rare standalone Wednesday meeting on August 11, and we have our four best bets for the premier card midweek card, which includes a Chris Waller-trained runner from Melbourne.
  • Race 2 2:00pm AEST – No. 1 Mother’s Mercy
  • Race 3 2:35pm AEST – No. 4 Come Along
  • Race 4 3:10pm AEST – No. 2 Toomuchtobear
  • Race 7 4:55pm AEST – No. 4 Soami

Race 2 2:00pm AEST – No. 1 Mother’s Mercy

The Paul Messara-trained five-year-old owns five wins from nine starts and she looks above average. She scored a fresh up win at Newcastle by a nose, so having winning form on this track is ideal. The well-bred daughter of Redoute’s Choice followed it up with consecutive fourths at Randwick, so she has been facing tough opposition and the odds have firmed throughout the week.

Bookmakers opened her at $2.80 before she firmed into $2.50. She gets the benefit of a 3kg claim, taking her weight down to 60kg. That is a sizable difference and we’re happy to take the odds available.

Race 3 2:35pm AEST – No. 4 Come Along

Value is with the John Sargent-trained gelding that is capable of bouncing back from two disappointing efforts. The six-year-old son of Power is a five-time winner overall, and although fruitless in two starts at Gosford, he can’t be overlooked at this level of racing. His most recent run came at Rosehill behind Casino Mondial and Arctic Thunder, which is Saturday class racing.

Having had three runs this preparation, Come Along should be fit and he typically shows his best form after a few starts. Barrier two is ideal and despite his odds drifting significantly throughout the week, punters get better value now.

Race 4 3:10pm AEST – No. 2 Toomuchtobear

Chris Waller lines up the four-year-old gelding that comes off a win at Bendigo and Victorian form should stack up nicely at this level. The son of Press Statement has yet to finish worse than third from four career starts and the form behind him at Bendigo has stacked up brilliantly. Mr Brightside finished second on that occasion and he has since won back-to-back races in Melbourne.

Waller bringing him to New South Wales is an excellent sign and it shows he’s ready for this level of racing. The early betting support is there and after opening at $3.20, punters have come for him into $2.80. That’s a solid move and one worth paying attention to.

Race 7 4:55pm AEST – No. 4 Soami

Value is with the Matthew Dunn-trained Soami, who has won three of his last five starts. The son of So You Think won easily at Randwick last start when letting down to score nicely by a half-length. He appreciated the easing track conditions and conditions at Newcastle should be right up his alley. He has already won twice this preparation and he is starting to get respect in betting markets. After opening at $7, his odds are now into $5.

The 3kg claimer in the saddle is ideal and drawing barrier five should see him land in a good spot. He rates better than the favourite in our opinion, so put him on top.
