Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Hawkesbury on May 3.
- Race 3: Aerodrome
- Race 4: Able Willie
- Race 9: In Flight
Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?
Race 3: Aerodrome
The Michael Freedman-trained juvenile remained unbeaten after another solid performance on Saturday where he beat a field of two-year-olds to the line in the Clarendon Stakes over 1400m.
Fast away, he settled second parked a length behind the leader before scouting wide on the Heavy 8 surface to find firmer going and in the run home, finished best to take home first prize by almost a length on the line.
He looks a promising type with plenty of upside and could have a big future ahead of him. Keep him safe for now.
Race 4: Able Willie
Chris Waller’s six-year-old resumed off a 12-week spell on Saturday and did it in style as he came from well back to collect the cash in a BM78over 1100m.
Spotting the leader six lengths on straightening, Nash Rawiller stuck to the fence and made up the ground required to arrive in time and take home the winner’s cheque.
That was his third win from seven first-up appearances and also had minor placings when second-up on his resume.
The Written Tycoon gelding has come back in great touch and looks well worth following for a few more runs this preparation.
Race 9: In Flight
The Joe Pride-trained galloper was second-up on Saturday and gave every indication he is now ready to win.
Settling just behind the speed, one off the fence, Jay Ford kept the mare restrained as she tracked the eventual winner (Dragonstone) into the home straight.
In the run home, she tracked wide and hit the line strongly, beaten a neck in the end.
Already a winner when third-up, the four-year-old did enough to catch the eye and should be one to watch over the next couple of starts.
