Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Gosford on May 10.
- Race 2: Sarapo
- Race 4: Hurstville Zagreb
- Race 6: Winning Proposal
Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?
Race 2: Sarapo
The well-bred Frankel colt made his racing debut on Saturday and turned plenty of heads with his runner-up finish in the Two-Year-Old Hcp over 1200m.
Settling at the tail of the field, Chad Schofield made his move just before the turn and made up good ground and despite being the widest runner on straightening, ran home stoutly to finish less than a length from the winner.
Hampered half way in the run home, he lost at least a length from the bump he received, making his efforts in claiming second prize look even better.
He has plenty of upside about him and will only improve on that performance.
Race 4: Hurstville Zagreb
The Divine Prophet gelding was resuming after a successful debut campaign and after a 10-week break, showed plenty of promise when first-up on Saturday where he finished an eye-catching second in this BM72 Hcp over 1600m.
Settling back in the field, Tyler Schiller worked him towards the front nearing the turn before pushing him all the way where he made good ground out wide and only his lack or racing condition prevented him from claiming the gold medal, beaten less than a head on the line (behind the in-form Enter The Dragon).
It was an impressive dress rehearsal for the QLD Derby in three weeks time (Sat 31 May) where he is currently listed at $15 with Ladbrokes all-in markets and going by his work on Saturday, an each-way ticket this far out isn’t such a bad idea.
Race 6: Winning Proposal
The Bjorn Baker-trained filly was fresh off a 10-week spell on Saturday and caught the eye with a come-from -behind finish that impressed.
Settling near last, Rachel King rode a very patient race which almost came off where the three-year-old finished of them all, taking lengths off the deficit before finishing third in the BM78 event over 1000m.
Fitter for that run back, its onwards and upwards from here where she is already a winner when second-up and off Saturday’s effort, should be kept safe for a few more yet.
