Saturday racing headed to Bendigo in Victoria on Saturday April 12 for a 10-race programme that featured the Bendigo Guineas and the Golden Mile.
- Race 1, BenchMark 78 (2400m)- St Vincents Garden
- Race 5, Three-Year-Olds (1100m)- Sweethearted
- Race 10, BenchMark 84 (1300m)- Pivot City
Here are our blackbookers and horses to follow from the action.
Race 1, BenchMark 78 (2400m)- St Vincents Garden
Not quite sure how the form will play out of this with the stayers going at a very slow tempo in the early to middle stages at Bendigo. This didn't suit St Vincents Garden, who was well back in the run. But the former import closed off steadily for 4th in the small field, producing the fastest last 200m. He was second up on the weekend and will probably benefit from the run, while he may want even further.
Race 5, Three-Year-Olds (1100m)- Sweethearted
He was never really in the race as an easing $3.50 chance with the money that came for Manolo Bling being right on the mark. Sweethearted had to settle for 3rd behind that horse with a slow start proving costly at the business end, while he then had to be steadied before racing keenly. The Phillip Stokes-trained galloper closed off with the fastest last 400m. It was at this stage of his initial preparation that he produced two dominant wins and the son of Brave Smash might be looking for slightly further.
Race 10, BenchMark 84 (1300m)- Pivot City
He missed out as a $1.95 favourite but Pivot City might be worth another chance at his next start. The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained galloper settled midfield i the final race of the day then couldnt quite get the run at a vital time before shifting out at the top of the straight, closing off with the fastest last 200m of the entire meeting to place 3rd behind Marble Nine, beaten just over half a length. It remains to be seen where the four-year-old heads next. He was placed behind Skybird at Group 2 level in Adelaide around this time last year and a trip over the border could be an option.
