Bendigo Racing Tips 20.08.2021 - Top Value Picks

Bendigo hosts a Friday meeting on August 20, and we have our four best bets. There are some smart types in action at the Victorian meeting, including a Victoria Derby runner that could hit the ground running this season.
  • Race 1 1:00pm AEST – No. 10 Vilanculos
  • Race 2 1:30pm AEST – No. 8 Decent Raine
  • Race 4 2:30pm AEST – No. 5 Tour of Duty
  • Race 7 4:00pm AEST – No. 1 Lombardo

Race 1 1:00pm AEST – No. 10 Vilanculos

The maiden stayer is running out of chances to impress, but we’re prepared to give her one more chance. She scored her fifth placing from eight attempts at Bendigo last start, and she’s good enough to improve that position on Friday. She is a daughter of Crowded House that appreciated the rise in distance to 2400m last start, so staying at this distance won’t hold any fears.

Danny O’Brien lines up the four-year-old that didn’t fire at Flemington two starts back, but that came behind Seiners Express and Foxy Frida. This is a much easier race, and she could reward loyal punters with a win.

Race 2 1:30pm AEST – No. 8 Decent Raine

We were impressed with Decent Raine’s win at Echuca. The three-year-old filly scored emphatically by five lengths, and although it came on a heavy track, she should get conditions to suit at Bendigo. She had been facing tough fields in the city, including an eighth at Caulfield behind Arcaded and a sixth at Flemington behind Tycoon Humma.

She appreciated the drop in class last start and it had an immediate effect. Drawing barrier three is ideal and having John Allen in the saddle is another positive. We have high hopes for Decent Raine and $3.10 is a fair price from bookmakers.

Race 4 2:30pm AEST – No. 5 Tour of Duty

Mike Moroney lines up the four-year-old gelding that owns two placings from six starts. Despite yet to win a race, the son of Hinchinbrook lined up in the Victoria Derby last start when running 10th behind Johnny Get Angry. He drops right back in distance for this race, but he has shown form over shorter distances and there isn’t much opposition in this field.

We have already seen stayers make excellent resuming runs over shorter distances this season, so Tour of Duty could keep the trend going. He is a drifting favourite, but we’re happy with the current odds and he could end up paying a value price.

Race 7 4:00pm AEST – No. 1 Lombardo

Lombardo is a three-time winner from only six starts, so he’s useful and capable of improving his record on Friday. The Price/Kent-trained five-year-old comes off a tidy effort for sixth at Flemington, which was much better than it reads. He was involved in a close finish, with 1.5 lengths covering the first six runners home.

His win prior at Morphettville is a good betting guide. He won by a half-length as an odds-on favourite, so punters get value odds here. Barrier 12 is the only negative we can find for Lombardo, but he owns good tactical pace and jockey Patrick Moloney should be able to navigate a path through the field.
