Race 1 1:00pm AEST – No. 4 The Defiant One
Punters don’t get huge odds for The Defiant One, but he should get the ball rolling on Tuesday. The Maher/Eustace-trained gelding finished second behind Cardinal Gem at Ballarat last start and that form has been franked at Saturday level. The son of Rubick draws ideally in barrier two and we’re not surprised by the significant betting push.
He has been backed into an odds-on quote, and although the odds are short, we would anchor The Defiant One in multi bets at Ballarat. He shouldn’t have much trouble beating this field and breaking his maiden status.
Race 4 2:30pm AEST – No. 9 Zoudini
Most of the money has come for Zoudini and it’s not hard to see why. The Lindsay Smith-trained four-year-old owns three placings from four starts and it’s only a matter of time before he breaks out of maiden grades. He comes off his worst outing, which was a fourth on this track, but he was only 2.8 lengths behind the winner after getting a touch too far back in the run.
Rising from 1100m to 1500m is ideal for the son of Zoustar and having senior rider Brett Prebble in the saddle only helps his chances. Punters should expect his odds to firm to an odds-on quote closer to start time.
Race 7 4:00pm AEST – No. 3 Martini Special
Martini Special has been a touch unlucky throughout her career. She owns one win and two second placings, but she could have easily won three races. The three-year-old daughter of Super One finished second by a nose at Sale two starts back and it was only the heavy conditions that defeated her at Mornington last start.
She will appreciate getting 2kg off her back and after opening at $4, it comes as no surprise to see those odds firm throughout the week. She is slightly better than most midweek types and she only needs to find cover from barrier nine to get the better of this field. It could pay to take the odds available as they will likely firm.
Race 8 4:30pm AEST – No. 7 Madame Bolli
It took Madame Bolli 11 starts to break maidens and she then decided to win two in a row. Despite rising in class for this contest, we fancy her chances of scoring three on the bounce. The three-year-old filly by Written Tycoon has figured in the placings in eight of her 12 starts, so she’s consistent, and having winning experience on this track adds to her appeal.
It’s also her preferred distance with seven starts for two wins and three placings. She gets 2kg off her back from Josh Richardson and after opening at a higher quote, we’re not surprised money has come for her. Form runners are always worth following and her confidence levels couldn’t be higher. Expect another fine effort from the favourite.
