Race 1 12:30pm AEST – No. 12 Testa Rock
Looking to go one better than her debut run is Testa Rock, who finished second behind Atlantic Seas at Pakenham. The two-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock is bred to be better than average and the first two home gapped the rest of the field, which is always a good sign.
She has to contend with a wide barrier draw but getting 2kg off her back helps and she looks to have more talent than most in this field. We’re not surprised by the betting push for the favourite and she should firm close to race time.
Race 2 1:00pm AEST – No. 8 Mashrabiya
Mashrabiya has made a habit of running second, but the three-year-old daughter of Teofilo must be respected. She is a Sydney-based filly, which is positive and she wasn’t far behind the winner at Kembla Grange last start. Punters have come for her in every start, including running as the $1.65 favourite two back at Newcastle. She also ran as the $2.10 favourite at Kembla Grange, so she has been expensive.
However, she clearly has talent, and running in Victoria could do the trick. Her effort to run third in a recent Flemington jumpout was solid and it should have her primed and ready to fire for her Victorian debut on Tuesday. Her odds are no shock and punters get better value compared to her most recent runs.
Race 5 2:30pm AEST – No. 4 Bainbridge
Strong money has come for Bainbridge, which opened at $2.35. The five-year-old gelding almost got the chocolates at Geelong when finishing a half-head behind the winner and he was only grabbed in the dying stages. The son of Rebel Raider looked good prior when winning at Geelong by 5.5 lengths, so we could see a return to that form.
He might be only a three-start runner, but he won’t face many fields this easy and we’re expecting him to take advantage. Bainbridge is the testing material and his odds could firm to an odds-on quote come race time. He handles conditions and punters have identified him as the runner to back, so it could pay to take the odds available now.
Race 7 3:30pm AEST – No. 3 Ize Fairdinkum
Mitchell Freedman lines up the son of Fruehling that scored a solid maiden win at Ballarat last start and he’s capable of going back-to-back. The four-year-old had been around the mark throughout his career before winning and that consistency holds him in good stead for this contest. He didn’t have everything go his way last start after covering ground, so the one-length win was even more impressive.
There has been steady betting support for Ize Fairdinkum throughout the week. He opened at $6.50 and he could make a push for favouritism on race day. The big weight of 63.5kg shouldn’t matter too much against this level of opposition and he looks like an excellent each-way bet at Ballarat on Tuesday.
