About Randwick Racecourse

Randwick is one the most popular racecourses in Australia which hosts one of the biggest thoroughbred races.

Located in Sydney, New South Wales, Randwick is a centrally-located track.

The Championships and the Sydney Spring Carnival are the two major meetings at Randwick but it hosts racing throughout the year and is one of Australia’s busiest tracks.

Home of the Australian Turf Club, Randwick is loved by racegoers and punters alike, which makes it such a great racecourse to bet on.

Randwick Racecourse History

Randwick first opened in 1833 after NSW Governor Richard Bourke designated land to be used as a racecourse.

The first race was a privately-held affair in June 1833 and in the early 1840’s, the Australian Jockey Club was formed.

They moved to Randwick in 1860 and racing resumed for the public in May that year – attracting a crowd of 6,000.

The land was granted for the AJA all the way up until 2011 when the AJA and Sydney Turf Club merged to become the Australian Turf Club (ATC).

It was given the name of “Royal” Randwick in 1992 following Queen Elizabeth II’s visit.

As well as being used for racing, Randwick is also a popular destination for concerts.

There are currently five stands which are used by public and private Royal Randwick members.

Randwick hosted Australia’s richest race in 2017. The Everest was a new concept designed by Racing NSW and ran for a $10 million purse.

It has since increased that prize money and looks likely to remain as the world’s richest turf race.

Randwick Racecourse Races

Randwick hosts a number of Group 1 races, in particular eight Group 1 races during The Championships in April.

Held over consecutive weekends, The Championships are a festival of races which includes the Doncaster Mile, Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Sydney Cup.

Later in the year, Randwick hosts The Everest, Flight Stakes and many more top Group 1 races.

It’s the best racing surface Sydney has to offer and it is rewarded by hosting some of Australia’s most important thoroughbred races.
