Flemington Racecourse History

Opened in 1840, Flemington is one of Australia’s oldest racing venues in the mainstream.

It sits on Crown Land and was originally leased by the Victoria Turf Club before merging with the Victoria Jockey Club to form the Victoria Racing Club.

10 years following the first Melbourne Cup in 1861, the Victoria Racing Club was given legal control over the Flemington Racecourse and it’s still owned by them to this day.

It’s the only track in Australia that hosts a 1200m sprint down the straight, known as the “straight-six” and it’s circumference spans 2.3km - one of the largest tracks.

With a crowd capacity of 130,000, many meetings held throughout the Melbourne Spring Carnival have reached maximum levels.

The 2006 Victoria Derby meeting saw an attendance of 129,089 and the 2003 Melbourne Cup went close with 122,736.

Home of many of Australia’s biggest Group 1 races, Flemington is also gifted with the latest technology and advancements. In 2000, the grandstand got a $45 million facelift.

Flemington was added to the Australian National Heritage List in 2006.
