2020 Up & Coming Stakes Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips
Just like the name of the race, the Up & Coming Stakes is for the rising stars of the turf in Australia.
Held at Randwick on the same card as the Winx Stakes and Silver Shadow Stakes, the Up & Coming Stakes is an important race.
It holds significant importance for the rest of the Sydney Spring Carnival and that’s shown by the quality of the 2019 field.
True Detective has been best-backed to win but the likes of Lucicello and Athiri are hot on its heels for favouritism.

2020 Up & Coming Stakes Best Bet– True Detective @ 2.40
True Detective could well be unbeaten at this stage of his career and punters have realised this early in the betting markets.
His opening price of 3.30 was quickly taken into 2.40, where he should remain steady right up until start time.
Trained by Chris Waller, the three-year-old colt was a winner on debut at Rosehill before having two runs on an unsuited heavy track.
The first came behind talented winner Spend before he ran a nose behind the experience Misteed at Randwick. This race is much harder than those, but he looks up to winning at group level.
James McDonald rides and he should get an economical run from barrier three.
2020 Up & Coming Stakes Best Each Way – Lucicello @ 5.00
Stablemate to True Detective, Lucicello was good enough to win consecutive races before working home nicely last start.
Her first win came at Randwick when beating a moderate field by over two lengths before winning again at Rosehill. That form would be franked when running third at Rosehill behind Dawn Passage earlier this month.
Form out of that August 10 race should stack up nicely this season and she was asked to do plenty from the back of the field.
Taking on the boys is never easy and she doesn’t get in well on the weights, but having a turn-of-foot will win her many more races.
She’s certainly worth including in selections at the each-way odds.
2020 Up & Coming Stakes Best Roughie – Athiri @ 7.00
Not quite a roughie but she deserves to be included in selections following a better-than-average two-year-old season.
The James Cummings-trained filly was a winner on debut at Rosehill before tackling the likes of Lyre, Kiamichi and Bivouac in some tough races.
She was a little disappointing when running fifth behind Dawn Passage in the Rosebud last start, but she’s only going to improve with more racing under the belt
Hugh Bowman is a key booking and we’re expecting her odds to stay steady throughout the week.
True Detective is the clear top pick for the Up & Coming Stakes at Randwick. The Chris Waller-trained colt has the race fitness and class to cope with this field.
Stablemate Lucicello and the talented Athiri could provide the challenge at each-way odds.
