Winterbottom Stakes history & key facts

The Winterbottom Stakes was first run in 1952 when taken out by Raconteur. Since that time, it has been taken out by some of Australia’s greatest sprinting thoroughbreds. Placid Ark, Miss Andretti, Takeover Target, Ortensia and Buffering are all past winners.

The form out of the Winterbottom Stakes stacks up worldwide. Miss Andretti went on the smash the record in the 2007 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2007 and Takeover Target scored a win in the Winterbottom Stakes having come back from Royal Ascot where he finished second in the 2008 King’s Stand Stakes and fourth in the Golden Jubilee.

Ortensia always possessed international form and the two-time Winterbottom Stakes victor is one of the classier winners of all time.

The increase in prize money has seen an increased interest in the Winterbottom Stakes and the weight-for-age contest provides a level playing field for horses of all ages.

The Perth Summer Carnival is often eyed as an easier carnival to win at for the Victorian and New South Wales’ sprinters, which only adds to the quality of the field and it never fails to excite the massive crowd on course at Ascot.
