2019 Memsie Stakes Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips
|Date||31st August, 2019|
|Prize Money||$1 million|
The Memsie Stakes is the first Group 1 thoroughbred race of the Melbourne Spring Carnival and it’s worth $1 million.
Held at Caulfield in late August, the sprinting features includes some of Australia’s finest short-course horses and also some runners looking for more distance.
The 2019 edition has already attracted some star entries, including All-Star Mile winner Mystic Journey, which is using this race as a preparation for the Cox Plate. Also, included in the entries are the likes of Scales of Justice, Pierata and Osborne Bulls.
It’s always a top race to kick off the carnival and this year should be no different.
2019 Memsie Stakes Best Bet – Mystic Journey @ 2.50
The rising four-year-old is a winner of 10 from 13 starts and she has already won over $3.2 million.
That’s mostly due to her winning the Australian Guineas and All-Star Mile last preparation, both of which are tough races to win.
She’s the rising star of the Australian turf and although she missed her planned first run of the campaign last week, that won’t hold her back much.
There’s a month till the Memsie Stakes and she should be fit and ready to fire.
Her ultimate goal is the Cox Plate, where she’s currently the favourite to win, but the 1400m is ideal here and she has proven to handle all distances.
Punters have enjoyed backing Mystic Journey throughout her career as she holds a 253.5% ROI and that’s unlikely to drop this season.
Bookmakers are offering 2.50 for the star filly and we’re happy to take that value on offer.
2019 Memsie Stakes Best Each Way – Scales of Justice @ 5.50
Scales of Justice made a huge impression when winning the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield last start.
It was his first start in eight months and he scored easily by 3.3 lengths over the likes of Jungle Edge, Sesar and Cliff’s Edge. That was an incredible performance from a talented sprinter which had fallen out of favour with punters in recent times.
He didn’t have a good Perth Summer Racing Carnival when running fifth in the Lee Steere Stakes and third in the Colonel Reeves Stakes but he has rebounded nicely.
This is the same Scales of Justice that won the Group 1 Railway Stakes in 2016 and if he’s anywhere near that form, the Memsie Stakes field could be put on notice.
2019 Memsie Stakes Best Roughie – Osborne Bulls @ 11.00
We are not sure if Osborne Bulls will be lining up in the Memsie Stakes but he’s a good roughie chance if he does.
He was once considered the best sprinter in the Australia and considering the odds punters are getting, they have to be taken.
The James Cummings-trained six-year-old has run second in five consecutive Group 1 races and although he hasn’t been able to win, the performances still have good merit.
Punters could be critical of Osborne Bulls but he’s all class and deserves a chance.
