The Livamol Spring Classic was formerly known as the Kelt Capital Stakes and was, at one stage, New Zealand’s richest race. It’s still one of the finest races on the calendar and punters look forward to it every year.

    Livamol Classic New Zealand History

The Livamol Spring Classic has been in existence from 1955 and it’s the last leg of the Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown.

When it was sponsored by Kelt Capital, the prize money was increased from $500,000 to an incredible $2 million, but when that company went south, the prize money dropped drastically down to $250,000.

Despite being a $2 million race for two years, the Livamol Spring Classic failed to attract any international interest and it’s still the most popular spring race for the middle-distance types.

The Livamol Spring Classic has been taken out by the likes of Jimmy Choux, Princess Coup and Xcellent. Going back further in history, champions such as Balmerino, La Mer and Castletown scored a win at Hastings.

It’s regarded as the premier weight-for-age race in New Zealand and with the distance being the same as the Cox Plate, it’s a key lead-up for the Kiwi entrants.

    Livamol Classic New Zealand Field

The field for the 2019 Livamol Spring Classic won’t be confirmed until late September when NZTR releases the final field, barrier draw and weights.

The Livamol Spring Classic field consists of 16 runners and four emergency runners in case of scratchings. The field is determined by prize money, class and various other handicapping factors.

Livamol Classic New Zealand Form Guide

Because the Livamol Spring Classic is the final race of the spring for most of the thoroughbreds, form out of the Challenge Stakes and Windsor Park Plate is the obvious way to go.

Those two lead-up races both run at Group 1 level and as they progressively rise in distance, they are hardened enough to run out the 2040m.

Punters should look for those horses running on in the Windsor Park Plate and they are usually at each-way odds in the Livamol Spring Classic.

Form out of the Livamol Spring Classic has stacked up nicely in Australia.
