The 2022 Everest (1200m) winner, Giga Kick, will be out to claim his first victory since 2023 with victory in the Goodwood.
Back in the hands of his original trainer, Clayton Douglas, the five-year-old has been sparingly raced since claiming the Doomben 10000 (1200m) back in 2023 and comes into this first up off a spring campaign that culminated with a 7th placing in the Champions Sprint at Flemington.
He has been installed as favourite after the barrier draw ahead of the last start Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) winner, Charm Stone.
Five runners come out of the Group 1 for the fillies and mares that was run and won at Morphettville on April 26, including Ameena (runner-up), Prairie Flower (5th), Stretan Angel (9th) and Climbing Star (12th).
Reserve Bank is one of three last start winners in the race, alongside Charm Stone and Watchme Win. Reserve Bank claimed the Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes (1200m) at his most recent start and is one of two in the race that are aged three. The other is Ameena. Watchme Win claimed the John Hawkes Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville at his most recent start.
Generosity brings a touch of X-factor and comes over from Western Australia after placing 3rd in the recent The Quokka
Four runners are trained in Victoria and that state has provided all but four winners in the last 25 years, auguring well for the likes of the Freedman and Price/Kent Jnr stables. Giga Kick is another that is trained in Victoria.
2025 The Goodwood Speed Map
Press Down might look to scoot across from barrier 10 to take up the running, while Reserve Bank is set to also come across. Sir Sway can tuck in just behind them. Charm Stone might settle closer than what she did in the Sangster on the back of the better barrier. Giga Kick will be ridden by Mark Zahra and draws out in barrier 12. Zahra will look to land just worse than midfield in the running line.
2025 The Goodwood Best Bet
Giga Kick is a clear top pick. While he has not won in two years, the figures he has been producing in all of his runs have been top notch, going 10 lengths or faster in all but one run. A key factor here will be the advantage he has under the set weights and penalties, coming in with just the 54.5kg. That is due to his absence from racing for a year, as well as his winless record in five starts since the 2023 Doomben 10000. The wide barrier might also be an advantage with a number of winners at Morphettville in recent times tracking out wide and into the centre of the straight.
2025 The Goodwood Value Bet
The Robert Sangster Stakes is the pick of the form of the others outside of Giga Kick and Ameena gets the 2kg weight swing in her favour after narrowly going down to Charm Stone. The filly from the Freedman stable was posted wide in that race and weaved a passage in the straight where she was briefly held up at the 200m before Charm Stone swooped. The daughter of Tassort can be an improver at her second run back. The other to consider is the West Aussie, Generosity. Her runs have been full of merit in her home state and she was wide in the Quokka, producing the fastest 400m-200m split before just peaking on her run late. With a softer run in transit, she can be a surprise packet with just the 52.5kg on her back.
