There are still many question marks surrounding whether or not overseas horses will be able to participate in the 2020 Melbourne Cup, but that has only increased intrigue surrounding the race that stops a nation.
Last year saw the first Australian-bred horse in over a decade take out the race when Vow And Declare scored a narrow victory for Danny O'Brien and Craig Williams, and there is a strong chance that this year may be an Australian-trained only cup.
We take a look at the futures markets and pick out three contenders who could star in the Flemington showpiece on November 3.
A $5,500 purchase for Horsham trainer Paul Preusker, the six-year-old gelding was extremely unlucky in last years race, producing arguably the run of the day when finishing fifth, beaten less than a length.
A lightly raced stayer who enjoys space between his runs, he burst onto the scene recording a dominant victory in the 2019 Adelaide Cup in just his sixth start, stepping up from 2000m to 3200m in the process.
One of the most exciting horses in the country, he has been ticking over beautifully leading into the race, with a brave second when looping the field in the Feehan Stakes before a desperately unlucky run in the Turnbull Stakes where he savaged the line.
Sitting alongside Verry Elleegant as Australia's leading chances for the Melbourne Cup, Surprise Baby will carry 54.5kg, 1kg more than he did last year, and if he can replicate that performance he is still the one to beat.
The Aiden O’Brien trained Galileo colt is one of the most exciting internationals coming across to Australia this year, with the Northern Hemisphere three-year-old set to step out for only his fifth career run in the Melbourne Cup.
Following the extremely successful trend of northern hemisphere three-year-olds who have dominated recent runnings of the race, Tiger Moth will be hoping to deliver champion trainer Aiden O’Brien with his first ever Melbourne Cup victory.
After breaking his maiden at start number two, Tiger Moth finished second in the Group 1 Irish Derby behind Santiago who has since franked the form finishing third behind Stradivarius in the Group 1 Goodwood Cup (3219m), before thrashing his opposition in the Group 3 Kilternan Stakes (2414m) by four-lengths.
Given a 2.5kg following his win in the Kilternan Stakes, Tiger Moth is set to carry 52.5kg in the cup and looks one of the leading international hopes.
The Anthony and Sam Freedman trained gelding imposed himself as one of the most promising stayers in the winter of 2019 as he strung four consecutive wins together, culminating in an outstanding victory over Surprise Baby in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes.
Unfortunately for the Irish import, his 2019 Melbourne Cup campaign went horribly wrong from the start, scratched at the barriers in a major lead-up race to the cup, it caused immense disruption to his campaign and he failed to bounce back to his best form.
Nonetheless, the seven-year-old Nathaniel gelding has returned this preparation in what looks career best form, going down bravely behind Persan in the Group 3 Bart Cummings where he was forced to endure a wide run in transit, before recording a brave victory in the Geelong Cup to secure his spot in the Melbourne Cup Field.
A long-time favourite in the lead up to the 2019 Melbourne Cup, Steel Prince looks in career best form, and leading into a race with so many question marks over his opposition, he possesses the bravery and tenacity required to win on racing’s biggest stage.
