This year will mark the 100th running of the Cox Plate around the picturesque Moonee Valley track, but who will go down in history as winning the weight-for-age championship race in the centenary year?

The domination of Winx was followed by Lys Gracieux's victory last year. Another champion will be crowned on October 24 when Australia’s best 2000m horses collide over the 2040m trip at The Valley.

Although there isn’t any certainty surrounding whether or not internationals will be coming, there is a massive contingent of local stars to ensure this year's race will be just as strong as ever, headlined by Russian Camelot, Arcadia Queen, Superstorm, Catalyst, Funstar, Colette and Verry Elleegant.

Master Of Wine

The Hawkes trained six-year-old gelding is one of the horses to watch for the spring, winning four straight races before a massive run in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes behind Addeybb.

The son of Maxios was always highly regarded by the Hawkes camp, but has gone to the next level in winning four straight races since the blinkers were applied, highlighted by trouncing his opposition in the Group 3 Sky High.

Beautifully placed at each start before stepping up in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, he was caught three wide the trip from barrier 12, finishing in fourth behind Danon Premium and Verry Elleegant.

A lightweight hope for the cups, the six-year-old German galloper possesses an electric turn of foot and handles all conditions, placing himself as one of the race’s leading hopes.

Arcadia Queen

The West Australian mare entered last spring spruiked as the heir apparent to Winx’s throne of Australia’s best racehorse, however, she failed to live up to the hype failing as favourite in The Everest and The Golden Eagle.

After missing the autumn due to a hoof issue, the five-year-old daughter of Pierro has won six of nine races, highlighted by her four-and-a-half length thrashing in the Kingston Town Stakes as a three-year-old filly.

Following a long layoff, the Grant and Alana Williams trained mare enters the spring headlining a superstar roster for goliath owner Bob Peters including Superstorm, Windstorm and Regal Power.

A mare who oozes class, she will relish stepping up to the 2000m and armed with an electric turn of foot, she can once again stamp herself as one of Australia’s best horses.

Barney Roy

Winner of seven from 14 starts, the Charlie Appleby trained six-year-old gelding launched to favouritism for the Cox Plate after taking out a Group 1 race in Munich last month.

Boasting very impressive formlines, first-up this campaign he finished third behind Lord North at Royal Ascot, crossing the line on the heels of Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Addeybb.

Fighting out his races on the speed, the son of Excellebration has only missed the placings on two occasions in his fourteen career starts, including finishing in the quinella ten times.

If he is allowed to make the trek Down Under for the spring and handles the tight Moonee Valley circuit, the Godolphin six-year-old will be awfully hard to catch from the front.
