2020 McNeil Stakes Tips & Predictions
The McNeil Stakes might not be the most popular race but it's a key guide to future races during the Melbourne Spring Carnival.
Held over 1200m for the three-year-old runners, it’s a key race in preparation for the likes of the Guineas later in the season.
A quality field lines up in the 2019 edition, which sees Super Seth emerge as the race favourite. However, a host of exciting runners are set to score an upset.

2020 McNeil Stakes Best Bet – Super Seth @ 3.60
Anthony Freedman was bullish about the chances of Super Seth before he made his debut back in March. He scored by six lengths and the foundation was laid for a top career.
The son of Dundeel continued his unbeaten form when winning at Caulfield by a length following that, but it all went wrong at his third start.
For some reason jockey Clayton Douglas sent the colt straight to the front, despite his first two wins coming from well off the pace.
That was enough for Super Seth to puncture in the straight and his perfect form line was ruined. It’s good to see senior rider Mark Zahra take the riding duties for this important race.
He’s a colt which could have a stud career lined up and winning black type is vital for his page.
Has remained rock-solid in the betting and punters are getting good value for a truly exciting animal.
2020 McNeil Stakes Best Each Way – Missile Mantra @ 4.80
Unbeaten runners are always fun to follow and Missile Mantra looks like a real up and comer.
The Snowden-trained filly scored a narrow win on debut when coming from well off the pace to win by a half-length. She then repeated that effort when scoring from near last at Caulfield.
She hasn’t beaten much in her two starts but the early signs are good. Having a turn-of-foot will win you plenty of races and she has already shown that.
The daughter of Smart Missile is being thrown in the deep end here and it’s a tough field, but she has things working in her favour.
Getting an inside draw is ideal and she won’t have to settle so far back in the nine-horse field.
4.80 is worth taking on an each-way basis.
2020 McNeil Stakes Best Roughie – Sebrakate @ 11.00
Consistency is key for Sebrakate and although he’s not the most fashionable colt, he could provide punters with some value.
The Lindsay Park-trained three-year-old finished second at Caulfield last start and although he was 4.3 lengths behind Bivouac, that form stacks up beautifully.
Bivouac runs in the San Domenico Stakes just 20 minutes before this race, so punters can use that as a top form guide for the McNeil Stakes.
Super Seth has a bright future ahead of him and winning the McNeil Stakes would cement that assumption. He has two quality wins to his name and could add another here.
Punters shouldn't overlook Missile Mantra, which is unbeaten after two starts. Same goes with Sebrakate, which has taken on hot fields throughout his career.
