Horses to follow and blackbookers who caught the Blackbook.com.au team's eye at the Flemington meeting on July 17.

Race 1 - Aktolgali (second)

Perhaps the top seed for the Victoria Derby at the moment, looking the type that is going to keep improving as he gets up in trip and into his three-year-old season. He was hitting the line well over his last furlong and although lacks a turn-of-foot, he can grind really well. Once he steps out to 2000m and more in a genuinely run race, we will know how good he is.

Race 5 - Messerschmitt (11th)

This gelding had zero luck from the 400m and llooked as if he had something in the locker as well, when the sprint went on he was not left flat footed, still travelling on the bit with nowhere to go. The key is keeping him to the straight and finding cover, where you can save him for that one dash. Always needs that shade of luck, but will go around at big odds win next start.
